What is the definition of live cards. Is it a coin-flip? 40-65% equity? can anyone give definition of live cards? Because i know there's live cards and there's non-live cards, which are dominations. just quite curious. ty.

You have AK he has 59, he has 2 live cards.
You have A10 he has 107 he has 1 live card.

Just like Kenzie said - live cards are the ones in your hand that you can still catch to win.

In the AK v 95 example, the player with 95 can catch either a 9 or a 5 to win (assuming the other player doesn't pair), which means they have two live cards.

In the AT v T7 example the player with T7 only has one live card because a ten will make their opponent a better hand.

It also has another meaning in stud games: because you see your opponents' upcards, you know if some of your outs have been folded. Your hand is more "live" if you haven't seen many of the cards you want be folded.

Aah ok. ty. Because I see hands like AK vs 67, then person with 67 says "i got live cards". or A5 vs KK, person say, i got live cards. but i didn't know the definition of it. I thought it meant "good enough chance to suckout since equity is 30-45%"

Its called life cards, because both cards are useful, if one of them hits the board. If you have A9 vs. AK, then your Ace ist "dead" and dominated, only the 9 is alive. That´s why it´s often better shoving 78s than A9, because you likely get called by an Ace like AJ or so (if someone has an ace)...

This is a term brought up largely because of hole cams. Once it became apparent the camera could see all the cards that have been in play during a hand, mucked or still active, the camera could tell us how many 9's were still in play, or 5's, using the example above.

Live cards thus means that as far as can be told, all of the cards considered live cards are still available and in the deck, not in the muck or your opponents hand.

Which brings up the follow up question;

What do you call it when one of the potential winning cards is known to be in the muck. Good example might be the OESD, where one of the cards is known to be gone. Only 1, what do you call that? semi-live?, Semi-dead? life support? ICU?
