Dealing with "that person"...

If you've ever played poker with someone who goes "all in" right off the bat (every time) just to nickel and dime the other players - how do you deal with that person?

Typically, I get really annoyed with people who do this (because they're not actually playing) and I find it difficult to want to continue playing. I'm wondering if there is a way to work around that aggressiveness?

EZ.. tighten up and play your top tier hands. Anything you'd feel comfortable stacking in pre is what you should counter this type of player with.

As stated above, wait patiently for the right hand and also widen your starting hands
But pick that width carefully and try to isolate yourself against the 'all-in' guy.
The last thing you want is to call with a medium strength hand only to find two more callers with you.

If he has shown down any hands try to anticipate what his range is.
Has he gone in ALL the time?

If you time it right you can easily double up or even knock him out.

all my advise is ditto to all above .....it is a wait game ...we've all been here and have been put out even with that prem hand only to hear an "lol" from the pain. I try real hard not to respond and leave....note him and remember is all you can do then...nothing more satisfying is making a difference against him and his play. That will also happen.....this is a good time to rejoice VERBALLY...trust me everyone on the table will be right there with yas....as ppl leave at the hands of this villian don't forget to gg their efforts.

Call wider.

This.

If they're open shoving with trash we can widen the range of hands we call with(for example instead of just calling with qq,kk,AA we could call with TT, jj,qq,kk,AA,AK,aq).

But yeah, this type of player is awesome because they're basically giving away their money. Welcome them.

Why does it bother you? I would think you'd be re-joicing.
Is it because you're folding out hands you were wanting to call them with? You risk nothing at all by folding if you've got nothing invested & it's early levels. But as others have said > call wider

this ^

I still don't understand why it bothers you? I mean don't you LOVE players like that? I sure do.

I sat down last month at a casino where two guys had a prop bet between each-other that was "Who can go the longest without calling or checking" basically fold, or all in. So, if they had a hand worth raising, they just went ahead and pushed all in. And they did this over and over. One guy actually woke up with pocket aces, and busted a guy who made a stand with queens.... I was a bit weary, but I just waited and waited until I got aces when I limped, and get raised all in by the guy folds back around to me and I snap call. he flips over A5, doesn't improve and I double up. He then pays the other guy his 20$ for the prop bet and the table goes back to normal.

These players can be a pain, especially if they have position on you in the early levels of a tournament. If they really are shoving every hand, you can no longer afford to play speculative hands early/cheaply as you'd generally like to do. There really is nothing for it except to tighten-up and wait for a decent hand and be prepared to get it all in pre-flop when they shove.

If you have position on them, however, its not nearly so bad. Once you know if they are in or out of a hand you can decide that if they are in, do you have a good enough hand to call their shove. Or, if they have not played this hand, you can resume your normal game.

First, determine how often the person is shoving in order to get an indication of his range. There's quite a difference between say every hand and one in three. Then decide what range you're willing to play for stacks against that range.

It also helps to have an idea of what the odds are likely to be. For example, against someone who is shoving every hand, and whose range is therefor any two, you're nearly a 3:1 favorite if, as suggested, you go against them with a top 10 hand. If your range is the top 40 hands, you're a little under 65%.

But except for HU, it's not just two people playing in a vacuum. In practice, the smaller the range you choose to play, the greater the chance someone else will get the shover's chips before you get the hand you're waiting for. So you have to decide on the risk / reward you're willing to go with.

Against these types of players expect to experience extremely high variance and a lot of bad beats. Had some maniac guy at 25nl a few days ago push all in first hand 9,4 offsuit for $25 i snap call with pocket aces. Flop come 9,K,3 rainbow turn comes 4 and he makes 2 pair. Then about 5 hands later, i wake up with pocket KK he shoves from behind me and wakes up with pocket aces, none of us improved and he won again. When a maniac runs hot, expect amazing things to happen.

Key is not too take it personally and stay focused .Dont feel you have to take him out either ,even with the best hand you 're always flipping and there 'll be a table full of players ready to pounce too ,and if one of em get's him first then you can extract his chips from them with real poker.

The secret is dont get annoyed with this person, you cant control what he does, however you are in full control of what you do and that is what is important here.

Patience grasshopper, thats the key to unlock his door and stack him, the right hand at the right time will arise.
ONaRoll is right, it IS NOT personal. If you start tilting because of the way he plays, he has achieved his mission and out of sheer frustration/annoyance, you will play back at him with some mediocre hand and lose your stack instead.
