There's no need to wait for pocket pairs to get into the pot. An alternative is to play "connectors". These are cards that are situated next to each other, eg AK, JT etc. They can make straights, straight flushes, flushes and straights if they are suited. The big question is how low to go with your connected cards (A2 is a connector but most players wouldn't play them). You can sit in three positions, early, middle and late. In early position play AK to QJ suited and AK and KQ off. In middle position play AK to T9 suited, and AK to JT off. In late position play AK to 78 suited and AK to 98 off. These starting hands are only my suggestions, and you can modify them to suit yourself.
