I am brand new to the board and SUCK at poker. Haha.

I am trying to learn some stuff but I need to get up to date on terminology you guys use.

What is vpip, pfr, and anything that goes along with that? Im assuming its with the stats tracker.

On that note, is the stat tracker something i should purchase?

Thanks!

The stats tracker is definitely worth having. I dont think that it is something that you desperately need immediately though. I am waiting until I cash out so i can buy it with poker earnings. For the meantime though, wait until you have like 5000 hands and then download the free trial for poker tracker. It lasts for 3 months and is very helpful. If you wait until you already have a few thousand hands then it will be much more helpful because its not very accurate until you have like 10,000 hands, but 5k is plenty

What pedro and Jilly said :)

Note that they're both expressed as percentages so the higher the number the more often they do the thing in question. VPIP only includes the times a player voluntarily puts money into the pot, so posting blinds doesn't count.

Not yet. Unless you're playing 25NL cash games or higher, I really don't think a HUD is all that important.

I've found the limit isn't nearly as important as the number of tables. If I'm playing 2 tables, I have little use for a hud (outside of historic 3bet by position type stuff). If I'm playing with 30+ opponents, I start to have a tough time keeping up with everyone. I always recommend someone get a hud tho. I also like to tell them just to start with three stats, vpip, pfr and # of hands. As you begin to understand what more stats mean and can understand how to use them, you can add them to your hud. Otherwise it's just clutter and makes things more overwhelming than they already are for new players.

If you're playing 2NL, you probably shouldn't be playing 10 tables.... And even if you were, you wouldn't be losing much by assuming that everyone is a loose/passive drooler (because almost all of them are).

I think tracking software would be useful at any limit, not necessarily so much for the HUD but rather to review hands, keep track of wins and losses, get to know the numbers associated with your own playing style, and find leaks you need to fix before moving up. But I'm kind of nutso about tracking anyway so your mileage may vary.
