Hi guys, I need a little help (lots of it actually )
So I've just started playing on pokerstars, lowest micro limits and it turns out I am losing, like bad. From 13$ I am down to around 8 (possibly 6 tomorrow ). I think this has a lot to do with the fact that if I get a "good" hand I can't let go (and by good I mean KK or AK or something) + tilting + poor odds estimations I guess (and underestimating opponents hands, lots of that )
Going past that I was wondering, now, that my bankroll is close to gone, would it be "good" to switch my style to that of a complete nit ? And by that I mean only betting hands from T J up (or even J Q up ) ? Could that work ?
Also, any tips on how to learn to let go of hands would be appreciated.
Sorry for the noob questions ( I know losing at the lowest stakes must be disastrous...)
Any tip is appreciated

What is it, like 3BIs? Thats not the end of the world, you might consider having more BIs for the stake you're playing because you can be even down 6BIs despite playing perfectly (variance etc). You're playing 6max?

1. Trust your instincts
You're sitting at a table and your subconscious is telling you that the hand is no good. Did you pick up on a facial tick? A slight delay when betting? Doesn’t matter. You should listen to those instincts
and then act on it.

2. Spot the danger signs
There are some basic moves that count as warning signs (like check-raises). When you come up against these, your opponent generally has something big, or could well have by the next card.

Look at the chips. If a player has paid over the odds for a flush or straight draw, maybe even called out of position, they’re doing it for a reason.

If they've called your bets all along, even though you’re projecting a tight table image, chances are they’re feeling very confident, something you need to take seriously.

3. Do the math
add up your chips. If you’re looking a bit short, don’t risk them on anything but a great hand.

The next bit of stat-gathering involves your opponent. What’s their raising range? How much are they betting on a good hand versus a great hand? This will help you read the strength of their cards and stay out of trouble.
Finally, what’s your table position? Semi-decent hands aren’t worth it in the blinds – it’s too easy to get trapped. Remember, a lot of mistakes and difficult decisions are down to calling with a marginal hand pre-flop.

Making laydowns are a hard thing to do – no one likes to think they're folding the winning hand. And you don’t want to go too far the other way and play scared. So practice these skills, focus on what you’re saving in chips or cash, and you’ll soon gain confidence that you’re doing the right thing. :icon_sunn

I am playing full ring and yes, it's about 3 buy ins
I was thinking maybe playing A LOT at one table until I got like 12$ (6 buy ins) again and then playing 2 table (maybe) using that same nit strategy
I've never actually played 6max
Is 6max easier ?

Also thank you for the replies, really appreciating it

I've actually downloaded the poker tracker trial program and it shows me VPIP and PR
Are there other really important ones ? If yes what numbers should I be on the lookout for ?
Again, sorry for the really nooby stuff...

Oh and about 5 hours of one table grinding and I am back to 9 53$ :D (for now )
I've just started playing and I am loving it so far (minus the losing as soon as I win anything part, I get ****y, spew chips around and promptly lose any sort of short term winnings )
Almost forgot, something great for newbies like me that I've noticed : on pokerstars there's the find player option when playing (right click ) and that shows if someone is multi-tabling (basically fish ), I get the feeling that saved me quite a few chips (and made me switch tables when I landed on one with about 3-4 multi tablers )

Depends. 6max is much looser because you have to pay the blinds more often. Therefore ranges are wider and the games are generally more aggressive. Its not a good game format for you if you want to be a complete nit. Thats why I asked :) Fullring is generally tight on Pokerstars so you have to remember that many players play a similar strategy to yours and its not always good to commit an entire stack with just a TPTK against that kind of nity opponent.

Good to know, thank you
And this is not exactly my style, I actually prefer to play speculative hands (67, 89, especially in late positions ) but now I am quite frankly getting scared and I may at best call with them (I'd bate with them in late position otherwise)
So being a complete nit can work (or as close as I can get to it )
Also, should I even commit cards like QJ against people who play like 5- 12+ tables at once or just super premiums ?
Oh and I am 6 50 now, I really suck at this

and I know this is getting rude but can someone take a look at this hand (the one that sent me from 9 to 6 50 )

When should I have realized I need to fold ? (again, sorry, I know I've already asked a lot of things)
Also, was this bad luck or just bad play ?

I cant answer that question because its extremely situational. 6+ tables players have rather tight ranges so with a hand like QJ, if you actually flop a Top Pair, you may find yourself in lots of spots when you're dominated by hands like AQ, KQ, AJ etc.

When should I have realized I need to fold ? (...)
Also, was this bad luck or just bad play ?

Why are you minraising preflop and then betting about 4.5x pot on the flop?

Right, about the minraising thing, people folded on that table, A LOT so I think it went something like this : well, most will fold if I bet and I want them to bet (that or plain carelesness on my part, honestly I can't find another reason )
I too noticed that if I had bet maybe he wouldn't have come in with J 2
And I went with that on the flop because I thought I had the best hand (J was hghest ) and I was terrified of a possible flush later on so I tried to make it short and force him to spew as many chips ASAP and basically end it on the turn
It didn't occur to me for a second that he could have J 2 (I did consider AA or AK but I thought I'd take the risk considering the flop and the fact that the chances for AA were slim and I'd have to be beyond unlucky)
Also I am getting very tired, I will come back tomorrow when I wake up (unless I go out ) and during the night (like now )
Again, thank you for the advice, it's really appreciated and giving me a bit of hope of improving
Also, if anyone can show me how I should have thought during that whole affair I'd appreciate it a lot (again, sorry for being needy )
Good night/day guys

First of all, if you're going to post more hands in the future, make sure to check out our Hand Analysis subforum (Cash games), where you will definitely get input from lots of good players, more experienced than me. Additionally we like to have basic stats on opponents, who you're facing in the hand (you're using PT so its just a matter of turning that option on in a hand viewer). Your 'reads' on opponents are useful as well. Oh and consider putting a hand result in 'spoiler tags' -> it makes an analysis more objective, everybody can be clever when they know the result :)

Secondly, its probably never correct to bet 4.5x pot, especially without a hand close to the nuts, because you fold all the hands that you beat and you isolate yourself with hands that beat you.

Finally - the hand. Preflop is an obvious 3xBB raise. You can make it even 4xBB if the guys ahead like to call. Flop is also an obvious 3/4 pot sized cbet, there is not reason to think that you're behind here and you can get at least one street of value from Jx, pocket pair type of hands. As I said, no need to overbet the pot; when he raises your big bet he means business (do you expect him to play like that with a pair of Jacks or a flush draw?...). As for the rest of the hand...I would have probably bet/called at least 2 streets, J2 or J6 are the hands I would not image him to have here... ;/

I've thought about it since then (since it was a pretty huge error I do not want to commit again) and yes, I totallly failed to do something very basic : estimate his hand range. I mean in retrospect it's obvious nobody bets everything on a J
Also I will take this :
Secondly, its probably never correct to bet 4.5x pot, especially without a hand close to the nuts, because you fold all the hands that you beat and you isolate yourself with hands that beat you
to heart and try my best to never do it again
I think one of my biggest failings is that despite the fact that I know quite a bit I NEVER seem to apply it. I get the feeling I am much more inclined to play better after I lose (since I know for a fact that particular bad line will get me burned, bad ) I seem to be slow, like very slow
I mean I had already read that you never want to over-bet with anything under 3 pairs at the micros, as in NEVER, turns out that was great advice... (now I know why )
Anyway, thank you for your time, I am honestly trying to get better despite my constant failings

6 and a half buy ins isn't much of a bankroll, if depositing more isn't an option then yes playing super nitty is perfect as it limits the amount of variance you'll face, don't worry about losing 3BI's i've had 10BI+ swings, it's just part of poker and you have to be prepared financially and mentally for it to happen.

I can rebuy, that's not the problem ( I can't rebuy more than 20 something buy ins but I can start again ), thing is I don't want to be the fish I am now
that being said I've found this http://www.pokerstrategy.com/quiz/
Can anyone tell me which site I should join ? 777 is out of the question
I was leaning between Titan Poker, winner and william hill
I've heard titan has rooms that only people with a certain number of hands played (small number ) can join. Basically I'd be put in with other fish of about my level.
Should I join TItan if only for that ? Is it easier for a complete fish like me than pokerstars ?

Hi crocoduck,

I too am new to online poker (been playing for almost 2 months now). I, like you played exactly the same for the first few weeks, although I loved it I had no real progression, I was ethier up (mainly due to luck) or down (probably due to bad plays as opposed to luck)

I read everything I could on tips, guides and strategy and it just seemed to confuse me even more, a plethora of information does no good if you don't know how to use it and I found that I was concentrating more on what I "should" be doing rather than what I felt....and then I found a little program called Holdem Magic.

To be honest I have seen very little reviews of it or info anywhere but it turned everything around for me, it keeps the HUD down to a couple of essential bits of info so you don't get too bogged down and distracted too much from what is going on. It gives you information on your opponents playstyle such as calling station, rock, shark, fish etc. etc. and why, and best of all there is a helpful little box at the side of your table.

The box gives you info about your handstrength in the position you are in, gives you hints about how you should play it, what cards you need to flop and the % that they will.

Then after your session it tells you how you played and what you need to improve and how to do it.

Now i'm not saying if you install this and follow it's guidelines and hints to the letter you will begin winning but it taught me things like positional awareness, stealing blinds, what signs to look out for etc. - it comes on a free trial and by the end of the 30 days I didn't really need it anymore as it had taught me the base of what I needed to know and now I just use poker tracker.

I play on 888 and I find that nearly every table there is a good mix of people and this software really does highlight the bad and the good quickly (although you'll soon learn how to work that one out quickly enough)

Although I'm by no means a good poker player and I still often make daft mistakes I still managed to get from my initial $10 deposit to just over $100 in about 7 weeks playing NL2 which I hope isn't too shabby

Thank you very much darktoof, I will check it out. I think poker tracker does that too to an extent but I am not good at reading the stats ( I know maniacs when I see them and that's about it but for that I don't need the tracker )
The hand strenght part is magic albeit I can calculate the odds a bit (if there are too many streets I get lost )
Omg found pics of that program in action, I LOVE IT (I will use it on the site I sign up to with that bonus, probably Titan)
Oh and you should check that link too, it will give you like 35$ free bucks to play with (just don't go with 777 if you don't get like 180$ in rake they take away all your money)

Also, again, which of the 3 sites do you recommend guys ? :D
