When I play online at the cash tables there are statistics stating what percentage of people stay for flop and also the average pot size. Now I have read that you want to join tables that have a high percentage of people that see the flop but is this for everyone or does it depend on your style of play and strategy? any pointers/tips when choosing a table? thanks

I look for the following:

Plenty of colour-coded fish or SLPs from my notes
Table VPIP of over 30%

Obviously you need to play a few thousand hands to know the fish but it's surprising how quickly they show themselves.

sorry but what are fish? I'm assuming bad players and people that you can prey on and take easy money. Also what is VPIP?

Fish = bad player

VPIP = Voluntary Put money In Pot. The % of times a player or group of players (table average) put money into the pot preflop, the higher the value the more loose the player or table is.

Choose table initially based on high players/flop or high VPIP, dont worry too much about average pot size, then when playing try to work out who the fish are and how many of them they are, ideally you want them sitting to your right. If no-one seems like a fish, then switch tables :)

Choose table where many fish are swimming.

Avoid table where at least 4 sharks are swimming in a 9-player table or at least 2 sharks in a 6-player table.

It's easy but somewhat simplistic to say you should look for fish. This doesn't factor in other things that can matter such as not all fish being the same, how good or bad you are vs different kinds, what type of game you're in the mood for at a given time, etc.

Yes, always look for bigger vpip, but you need to observe the table and players. That vpip statistics could have been from some player that was loose and lost and left the table. Also always watch for the regulars, don't get in to the pot with them unless you are strong.
