Why do people sometimes check in the dark? Is it so they don't necessarily appear as weak as they might if they checked the normal way? I usually think people have a pretty weak hand when they do this anyway but maybe I'm wrong? I'd love to hear people's thoughts on players and their hands when they check in the dark.

i think checking in the dark should be added to online poker its something that seems to be done often and can give some mixed reads either direction, i dont do it often myself but have had people do it, along with all in in the dark and has helped in my fgavore more than it hasnt

I have done it before, but more as a gag than anything

I think the move is not a good one, and if you do you would need a good explanation as to why...its way over my head, I would gather roughly 80-90% of the people who do it have no real idea why they do it or what is gained by the move.

Well top pro's do it on occasion against specific opponents, for specific purposes, so we amateurs obv ought to make it a major part of our online game.

<Googles> Ah! I understand now. What an odd tactic.

Though many, many years ago playing Brag at work people would sometimes go "blind" and you couldn't call someone who had gone blind and if you ran out of money checking them it was tough luck.

Found from experience they usually have a strong starting but unmade hand.

it can certainly throw your opponent off i guess, think as someone stated it's something we occasionally see "the best in the world" do. live poker allows for showmanship i guess. sometimes it forces opponents with premium hands to be really careful, sometimes opponents are flopped dead by sheer luck and and no idea what to do.. leave it to the pros i say lol :)

It's about using it as needed.

I use it in my limit 3/6 games everynow and again from the small blind as needed. My secret is to use on good solid hands that flop huge when they hit and would be to evident if I bet them out I want people to call me. For instance 10-j off call then check in the dark.. flop comes 897 bingo bango you checked person left checks you get some betters then you just flat call. If you get something like an ace on the turn you bet and hoped to get raised then just max it out to victory vs their 2 pair. If the board comes 10-2-k you see the action as needed and just fold.

In a no limit game hands like kk-aa-qq needs to be protected and raised up in limit it doesn't really matter much so the check in the dark play is very strong in the SB at 3/6/4/8 even 5/10 limit hold em if used right.
