Hello everyone,

I've only been playing for a few months, using pokerstars with about $20 in my account. I'm a student with very little money so don't really have the cash to deposit a large amount to start a bankroll.

I've been playing micro cash and zoom games, mostly $1 and $2 buy-ins with blinds of $0.01/$0.02, very slowly managed to grind up about $7 profit.

I know thats not amazing, but I struggle whenever I enter into tournaments, buying in for between $1.20-$2.20. I'm playing pretty tight and struggling to build my stack very quickly compared to other players in the tourneys, so I get caught out when the blinds start building.

I was wondering what people's advice was for differing your strategy for playing in tourneys vs in cash games. I haven't cashed in a tourney yet and end up going back to cash games to win back the buy-in I loose when entering tournaments. Is there any general advice I could use to differ my strategy to perform better in tournaments? I'm happy to give any further info on the way I'm playing if it would help.

Many Thanks
Nyall

first rule best one ever heard was from kid poker ... you cant win a tournament in the first hour/ second my own advice is an ebb and fall to tournaments ... the only way to learn is by application knowing when you have to make moves etc..

I lost all the time when i make that move for chiplead one day i will make fewer mistakes but the only mistake is not to go for it imho

i almost always make the right moves they dont always pay off folding can be a better option but when i have regrets its when i dont make a call with say pocket tens then blind down and think i lost an optimal chance on winning an event or moneying higher leaving money on the table etc..

get into league play here that will up your game and teach you extreme patience or it will beat you up and spit you out till you learn enough not to lose like that all the time lol

In tournaments you have to play a more conservative style. Cash games give you the ability to rebuy over and over so people take more risk. In tournaments once you lose your stack you are out, so it's important to play tighter. You need to get the balance right of tight play and not being too nitty otherwise you end up being blinded out. Just making slight adjustments will hopefully be all you need to transfer your cash game success to tournaments.

Better strategy for newbie players. Tight aggressive, overraises on value. Profit

Once you get down to 10 bb start shoving all in more liberally, especially from late position. Any pair or ace or two broadway often you just have to go with it when you are short stacked and no one has raised.

In early stages in tourney, play the same style as you do in cash games. Think of how many bbs you have in tourneys not the currency you have in tourney chips. Typically you start out in tourneys with 100bb and its normal to watch it go down to 20bb which is actually a soft spot of blinds in MTT.

Adjustment in MTT to cash is size of opponents stack relative to the bb and where they all are in correlation to your position. Be positionally aware as you want to play pots with players in position and control the game. Remember, being first to act in poker makes you feel you are in control but nope, the last to act is. Being in position is the best spot. You actually control play. You get to apply pressure on the action.

If you are playing huge mtt tounrys the chances of making the money is like 15% off the back. This is because of the high level of variance in those mtts. So with that being said my advice to you would be to stick to where you are making profit atleast for now then when your bank roll increases by about 100 % you can focus on tournaments where variance hurts the most. Then when you are ready and decide to attack the tournys i would suggest the smaller field tournys (180s or the 90s). You can start with the micro 180s or 90s where the buy-in ranges from $0.55 - $4.50. The smaller the field the higher the chance is for you making your money. So grind out those smaller tournys and what ever you do, good bank roll management advice is that any tourny or cash game you go in make sure your Bank ROll is 100x the buy-in or the stakes. gl sir
