You probably will get various different answers for this, but probably most will tell you that cash games are the most profitable. I would suggest that if you are considering starting to play cash games make sure you have done your homework: Books, Videos, Training Sessions, Coaching, Software, and probably few other resources. I have noticed after taking a 4 year break from online poker the game has defiantly got a lot tougher, and you are going to have to know what you are doing. Make sure you can beat the micros before you move up to higher levels.

It is question of bankroll versus time. Tournaments take a long time, but cash games are deep stacked and require much more money. I liked the Sit N Go format where the time is reduced and multiple games can be played simultaneously. Realitypoker's advice is solid though. Do your homework first. Sit 'n Go Strategy by Collin Moshman is a nice start.

If I didn't live in the US I'd be playing Sit N Goes on poker stars.

Cash is a lot more profitable, but a LOT more tilting.
Getting various bad beats in sequence can make you go mad tilted.
Tournaments is a lot easier to have good bankroll management.
So it really depends on your style, you got to play both and see what happens.

No answer to this. What works for me won't work for someone else.

Cash works for me. You won't get the thrill of winning a tournament but that doesn't worry me. If my graph is climbing, that is my victory. I like the odd tournament and I have tried unsuccessfully to grind various types of SnGs. It just doesn't work for me.

But it might for you. Only you know the sort of game that works for you. And if you don't, get some tracking software, play a stack of different types of game and see what pays for you. When you've found it, play it 95% of the time.

Cash game are more profitable, but I like to play in many tournaments in the same time with cash games. The good part in tournament is that when you are eliminated you lose just the buy-in if you can't be focused or if you don't have patience at tables and in cash games you can lose more and more if you don't stop playing.

Know Thyself ... what 'fits' you.

Discover your strong & weak points and the game that suits YOU best. Hey, maybe it's RAZZ or Omaha H/L and not NLH.

What you actually "like to play best" is likely what you should be playing.

I would prefer cash cames over MTTs just because of the variances.Anyway you got to find out yourself which of these two that really suits your way of play.

Man, you want free advice? Well you're probably gonna get what you paid for...

I'll never hide the fact I feel it's cash games all day long. If you can grind cash, there's always a game, and you should always be entering with an edge. I've done okayish I guess, for myself in tournaments. But I've grinded into day 2 or 3 or a tournament, and then you bust on this crap just because the blinds have increased, and I didn't accumulate a large enough stack fast enough so my M dropped pretty low, and then AT > JJ

Congrats you spent 2-3 freaking days playing this thing for 1.5-2.0x your buy-in. If I'd spent that time on a cash game table my expectation would've been significantly higher. That stuff wore on me, and it didn't take long for me to see that I was much better off playing the ring games full time.

*EDIT*
Fwiw, I beat the ever-loving crap out of 9-10 man SnG's. If you find info from Braminc on SnG's, that guy is the man. No fooling, he is straight up THE MAN on SnG's. I'm guessing you have a smaller roll if you're asking these questions, as it's something a person just starting would ask. If you're looking to boost your roll off the start, micro SnG's may be your way to go. IMO they're a lot of fun, and on Stars you can easily 9-table them. I'd load 9, and play those 9 through completion, because you'll bust in some, but in others as the field narrows you need more focus anyway. So once all 9 are done, or maybe you're down to HU on a few, then re-load another 9 and go at it again. I was pulling down some serious bank that way and the variance was almost non-existent.

*DISCLAIMER: These results may not be typical of the average player. No-limit hold'em is a game of inherent risk and Mase31683 does not guarantee nor imply any results as such posted. Cash games, tournaments and Sit & Go's involve substantial risk of loss and may not suitable for every player. The valuation of cash games, tournaments and Sit & Go's may fluctuate, and, as a result, clients may lose more than their original investment. All poker strategies are used at your own risk.*

I would agree it would have to be cash games. If you take a bad beat by some rivered a one outer you can just reload. In a tourney its over unless it allows rebuys. I personally like sng's because i have alot of fun playing them. play whatever you like the most.

Cash game - Requires more post-flop skills and play
Tournaments - requires more ICM and M zone plays, emphasize on pre-flop and flop.
Cash Game requires extreme bankroll management and tilt control.
Tournament requires tilt control.
You can tilt all you want in one tournament and all you lose is the buy-in to that tournament. You tilt in cash game, you can lose several buy-ins within few hands.
See what works out better for you.

Over the long haul you would want to grind cash games, and move up from level to level. The big score tournament is always nice, and maybe you satellite into it rather than buy in for the full amount of the larger buy in and then anything you cash amplifies your profit margin more. I love playing soft cash game omaha hi lo, not a more profitable game in my opinion. Good luck

Cash games nature is more on grinding (bit by bit).

Tournaments (mtt) nature is more on one time big time (big score).

Its your choice.

How many tournaments do you play before cashing something decent and making a profit?

Can't speak to micro buy-in tournaments, but the very best, top, elite, tournament players in the world cash 10-11% of their entries.

I would expect that number to be able to sustain higher at small buy-in tournaments with loads of fish. Also this is for MTT tournaments clearly, if you're cashing 10% in a 1-table SnG you have a problem, lol.
