Calling a bet when worse hands wouldn't have called my bet?

Over time I Have understood the concept of, will a better hand fold, or will a worse hand call when I bet. And sometimes when i'm in this situation, i'll check and then call, but doesn't that defeat the object in this logic? Am I understanding this right that I should just fold if my opponent bets?

Example:

Hero and Villian both limp from the blinds.

Hero holds 78

Flop comes 7K6

Hero bets

Turn comes T

Hero decides to check as he thinks no worse hand will call his pair of 7's and a better hand is unlikely to fold..

Villian bets

Hero calls.

Is this a mistake? Would calling after you decided to check be a bad idea considering you thought no worse hands would call your bet anyway?

You're leaving out some pertinent info. Gotta have SOME kind of read on your opponent. Because in order to understand what worse hands call and what better hands fold you need to know your opponents calling range, or at least have a fair guess.

I can think of a lot of hands that peel that flop. Considering you both limped that board is fairly dry and you are both on a pretty wide range (part of why I don't like limping, very limited info).

56 might peel.
K2 might peel.
J7 might peel.
33 might peel.
54 or 89 might peel.
A4 might peel.

When you check the turn you are giving your opponent an opportunity to steal the pot. Is your opponent the type of person who will do this? Because that T is not really a scare card unless your villain is holding 9T. Which is possible.

The other BIG BIG BIG piece of the puzzle is the bet sizing. "A bet" doesn't mean anything. The size of the bet makes all the difference. If you lead out with a pot sized bet and your villain called you off you have to determine how reckless he is. Some opponents are total fish in that regard, but most opponents are folding if they don't have a King in this spot.
