So I know the basics of poker but then after tilting away $400 I want to reconsider.

Basically I want to make a $20 deposit and through the use of cash games and building up, I want to make this into a considerable amount of money and even in the next few months possibly use this as a side income.

Advice on how to play hands preflop, when to know I'm ready to move up on the tables, etc. Is it recommended to multi table to start?

What tables should i play for NL Cash Hold Em with a $20 deposit?

Go to McDonalds.
Get an application.
Delete all poker sites from you computer.

2nl (1c/2c blinds). Better if you deposit $40 really so you can start with 20 buy-ins.

Carbon Poker only has minimum 2 cent/5 cent tables. Should I basically buy in for a full buy in at these tables?

Carbon is Merge they should have 4nl games.
Which is only 5bi's.An bar some ****ing awesome run good you'll prob go broke using that shity brm.
Advice Put $60-80 on there play the smallest limits (4nl)
read study practice brm.Only move up when your roll is $250 to 10nl.
ever 5k or so hands post your stats by position on here and fix the leaks in your game.

After losing $400 the last 2 days I'm very scared to put too much in thus I want to start with $20. If I do start with $20, what should my buy in at the 2 cent 4 cent tables be?

Scared to deposit more than $20 & determined to ignore BRM advice, doesn't really matter.
Good luck.

Yeah i mean this is a subject i know a lot about.I can grind micro's for a few months then one day have me a few drinks while i'm bored.Next thing i know i'm playing HU with like 4 bi's.Bottom line is 5,6bi's is not going to be enough to get started like 95% of the time.
Put 60-80 and vow to yourself not to play anything higher than 4nl or any mtt's or sng's until you get up to $250.Then play 10nl by then you should have more knowledge about the game, brm etc.

How long do you think it would take approximately to take a bank roll of 60-80 to about $250? Considering I played 2 tables at 2 hours a day or so with solid play?

If we assume you win at 8bb/100 (doubtful be w/e) that's .32/100 hands. 2 tables for 2 hours should put you playing around 300 hands/day. So you'll average winning $1/day. If you start with $60 it'll take you 190 days (6 months) to hit $250.

Like I said, MickyDs.

Let's presume you are in fact a solid player with a winrate of 5bb/100. You will take 265-266 days (negating variance) if you start with $80

Wth no RB?
I don't know if you play FR or 6max.
I have no idea how good bad your game is at this point in time.
Just for the sake of it lets say your good enough to win at 4bb/100 that would be .16 per 100 hands.
I'll just say you can put in 70 hands per table per hour (I'm guessing since i don't know what format you play)
70 x 2 tables i =140 hands per hour
140 x 2 Hours =280 hands per day
Per day = .44 a day
So if you put $80 on $250-$80=$170
So ~400 days :)
Thats why it's called a grind.
Also you should get better and crush 4nl for 8bb/100+ and go on to play 4+ tables as soon as you feel good about muti tableing.
Read, study learn to play 4+tables the number should go down to ~180 days or so...
Easy money right?
Edit why is my # way off every one elses? One reason seems i can't do 140 x 2 but still way off

70 x 2 tables i =140 hands per hour
140 x 2 Hours =240 hands per day
Per day = .38 a day
So if you put $80 on $250-$80=$170
So 447 days:)

Well for starters 140 x 2 does not equal 240, Not a math whiz, but I think it's more in the 172-181 area.
YW.

I have to agree with the above replies BRM is critical , you mentioned being scared and if I have learned anything its that scared money is lost money. You make extremely poor decisions when you play scared , just throw it away and save the time for golf if your playing with scared money.

jbeast, from reading your original post I get the impression that you see poker as an easy way to make a quick buck. It isn't.

Knowing the basics of poker simply won't be enough. To be able beat 25nl you will likely need to have played several hundred thousand hands and worked your way up through the lower levels.

Jumping in at this level with only a basic understanding of poker is a recipe for disaster, so my suggestion would be: stop thinking about poker as an easy way to make money, start from the bottom (2nl) and play because you enjoy the game and enjoy improving rather than because you want to make money. The results you want will likely follow, but it will take a long time.

Good luck to you anyway.

There are both easy and hard aspects to grinding out a roll playing micros. The easy part is that to become profitable, it just takes enough game to win from the weaker players and not give it all back to the better ones. The hard part, as other have noted in different ways, is establishing a decent win rate measured in $ per hour.

If we compare to a low-paying job, which I assume the comment about McDonald's was alluding to, it's hard to make that much playing micros. Do your own calculations using BB win rate per hour, hands per hour and buyin level. You'll see there's no easy combination to make even minimum wage.
