The first book I read was Theory of Poker by Slansky. It's a great book for learning the basics. I think other recommendations after that may depend on what type of game you decide to play.

Would you suggest reading all of Supersytem? I just read his NL holdem section, also bought The theory of poker and am currently on my second read. Next on the list are Dan Harringtons collection, and then the mathematics of poker. And I'll see how it goes from there. I plan to have a bookshelf full of poker books muhaha. I can read like **** in work and read the theory of poker in two days (currently re-reading in more detail) but the Rass and 5 card stud which is mostly focus' on makes the book a bit boring if you aren't into any games other than holdem, but the same prinicpals can be applied to all games.

lol @ all those old books. if you really need to understand the basics, you can easily google them for free or get a pdf of those books.

the game is so far advanced from those books you'd be better off reading crushing the microstakes or something.

you can also find used books on a used-stuff website (kijiji in canada) i picked up 5 books for $20 total....

3 harrington MTT books, skalansky.... and another i can't remember... almost done 4 of the 5...

also, there are lots of good stuff on the web for free.... scribd has some pdf poker books to download.... problem is though that you have to read them from a screen....... and it won't contribute to the bookshelf!

there is loads of free info on the 'net.... i try to read/watch something everyday.... then read my hardcopy books in the car when waiting...

just keep learning

I've got to disagree with just about everything you said. Just because you can find articles online for free about the same topic doesn't mean "those old books" aren't worth reading. I read dozens of articles about basic poker concepts before reading "Thoery of Poker" and still found the book very insightful because of how the author explained the same concepts. Also, the game has not advanced so far that the basic principles like correct pot odds or types of bluffs no longer apply.

After reading and learning the basic theories of poker, it is of course helpful to read other books like "Crushing the Microstakes" to understand how to apply those theories in today's game.

What books are you looking at?

Is it for beginners, intermediate or advance?

Doyle Brunson's Super System is without a doubt the best poker book I have ever read. If you want to learn poker, that's the book I recommend.

Being Canadian I just downloaded Mr. Negranu's "POWER HOLD 'EM" for free on the App store for my Android. So far its been pretty helpful - a lot of useful insight to a rookie like myself who is still grasping the game and playing in and out of position!

What are you looking for? Are you going to play cash, MTTs, SnG? Each have their own attributes and hence different approach, so different books.

I did a mistake of reading too many books and now, I have all these conflicting ideas, I have to unlearn everything. So my suggestion would be to stick to one particular format and to a particular book and add upon it, once you get a hang of the game.

And in general, keep away for the old schools, they have lost their charm.

I agree with Avi here, half the books tell you to never open limp the other half tell you to open limp. And yes Super system 2 was a great book, 10 years ago, do some of the concepts still apply, sure, but the dynamics of poker has changed a lot, go ask Doyle what he thinks about Nash equilibrium... Just food for thought.

For my personal experience, the two most influential books on hold'em I have read were the Harrington series. And the other book is something that is not really covered in books or video and that book was Decide to Play Great Poker by Annie Duke and John Vorhaus.

My poker game exploded by leaps and bounds once I started watching it being done rather then just reading it. Save your time and join a training site or follow some youtubers.

I leave you with this thought, it is one thing to read a theory, it is mind expanding to watch it being applied...

A struggling poker student here, we are on the same page as reading books goes, I can read piles of books and understand them but applying the concepts is the problem. Could you recommend some youtubers that you mentioned also what training site are you using?
