Greetings,

A good buddy of mine just caught the “poker-bug” watching the wsop Main Event on tv last week. He wants to learn to play MTT’s, I advised him to read Harrington’s original series of books, HOH 1&2....mainly because that’s what I did starting out.

He knows the rules of holdem, that part was easy, but is a complete beginner when it comes to strategy.

Did I give him good advice on study material?

Thanks for any suggestions!

I would suggest checking out Jonathan little tournament series. He also has an excellent book Mastering small stake poker. I would suggest reading the mastering small stakes poker 1st and them learning from his tournament series.

So these would be ok as a “first” book for someone brand new to tournament play? No need to read or study anything else first?

If they are really brand new to the game i would read Small stakes poker 1st. To be honest there is a lot of things even a seasoned player could learn from this book as well and I highly recommend reading it anyways but if they know how to play decently and want to learn tournament poker i would go straight to his tournament series.

A good series of books I recommend, and have learned a lot from myself, is Winning Poker Tournaments One Hand at a Time. You have some of the best poker players as authors, and they break down different hands and spots that will come while you're playing. You can also learn a lot of the fundamentals of poker tournament strategy from these books.

Harrington might be though for a newbie...
When I first read it it was a bit overwhelming to me as a poker noob.
Nevertheless it helped me a lot because most beginners will at least start to understand how many different factors a good poker player has to take into consideration when judging a hand.

I think Harrington’s books are something that you don’t just read once, but that you come back to every now and then to continue working on ascertain aspect of your game...

Thanks to EVERYONE for the suggestions and advice, it is really appreciated!

By chance, has anyone read Harrington’s more recent tournament book, “Harrington On Modern Tournament Poker.”

Curious what players thoughts are on that one, and do players still prefer the original series.

Harrington is a classic. The rules of the game are memorized in one day, and we spend a lifetime learning poker. For those of us who play poker, we are constantly evolving, learning more and more every day. On many occasions, we see the great champions committing mistakes, so I think it was a good idea to give them material to study poker ...

I'm pretty new at this as well, so take my recommendation for what it's worth. I've studied quite a few books so far, and the problem with a lot of the other books is they cover way more than you need to know for really small stakes (NL$2/NL5).

I'm studying BlackRain79's book Crushing the Microstakes. It's everything you need for those stakes and nothing more. He doesn't go over the basic rules though, so if he's that new, he'd probably need the basic rules explained.

Good luck.
