I would say 80% of the time when I get knocked out its because my PP isnt as big as the person that knocks me out. How do I get away from making a play like this

Late in tourney blinds are 200-400 and we both have 2500 chips

"I have position"

Me: JJ

Sb raises to 800 and I call

Flop 2-6-7 rainbow

He goes all-in, I call he has AA

Pretty much an unavoidalbe cooler given stack sizes, tournament stage, and flop texture. Another checkmark in the 'bad luck' column and move on.

Actually, if I'm the bb w JJ and the sb open raises into me, where my M is 4 (M is a represntation of how many orbits it'll take me to blind out if I do nothing but fold - here, if you continuously fold, you're only going to last 4 orbits), I'm shoving all in preflop.

Definite cooler if he's got AA as JohnnyFronts says.

Try searching for "ICM" and Harrington (Dan Harrington describes M and suggests different strategies based on what your M is).

It's not a 'mistake'.... you are super short & you have a premium hand....especially in BvB play it's a no brainer (any pos. really).
As they say... 'that's poker'. (.... I'd be getting it in alot lighter here than JJ).

Where did you get 80% from?

Either way, you should probably be shoving in this situation a vast majority of the time.

yeah, more times than you would expect pocket aces lose... i like to bet at least 1/4 chip stack when you have the pocket jj, qq, kk, or aa, and then see from there. obviously if somebody has higher pockets there is nothing you can do but most of the time chances are pocket queens or better has their opponets whole cards beat.

depending on how many players are left and the pay structure...i think you gotta fold to the all in ...leaving you with 1700

Not sure there's much you could do about it. Clearly you would have been much better off had an A, K or Q come on the flop. I don't think you could realistically have folded after he went all-in. I would have hoped he had top pair with an A kicker and that I was hoping my JJ would hold up - happens to me all the time. Seeing the overpair is always painful, but everyone but the last guy standing goes out eventually, quite often just like that.

I wish it was like that for me, a cooler. Its much worse to be taken out on bad beats.

this thread is only really meaningful up to about post #6, Likminutz's. After that I would have thought it is made mostly for spamming reasons, but this post below made me LOL.

yeah, more times than you would expect pocket aces lose... i like to bet at least 1/4 chip stack when you have the pocket jj, qq, kk, or aa, and then see from there. obviously if somebody has higher pockets there is nothing you can do but most of the time chances are pocket queens or better has their opponets whole cards beat.

so, i honestly expect that pocket aces get beat approximately by the statistical probability they would, which depends on the number of players in the hand, among other factors. so perhaps you wouldn't be right in that first sentence. then, betting "1/4 chip stack" is totally clueless. how much you want to bet will depend on many things, mostly your position, action before you, stack sizes, types of players at the table, etc. and of course there are things you can do if someone has a higher pocket pair - namely fold if you think you are beat (which you can reasonably figure out sometimes). but my favorite part came at the end: chances are that my pocket queens or better (where the heck did this range come from?) will have my opponents' WHOLE cards beat. i can just see their hole cards turning all blue from the beating. or could it be that it is just the top half of the cards that is beaten? or some other part? just what i can see? oh wait, that is just the blue deck we are playing with....

you call off nearly 1/3 of your stack. I just don't see folding after that call here on any flop. you got to figure the JJ rates to be the best hand here. and there are many flops that you really don't want to see. any ace or king may make if tough for you to put more chips in the pot(although it shouldnt) it may kill any more chips going in from the raiser holding hands you got beat. so i agree here its best to get it in preflop. you atleast gain some fold equity against hands that maybe a flip like AJ or KQ. for sure this is a cooler though.
