betting skills

i'm lacking betting skills period preflop on the flop and the turn and river and i need some advice on this cause i'm losing my rear on the river cause i'm thinking the bet i put out is high enough but i'm still getting called buy people still chasing on the turn with junk and hitting the 1 or 1 of 2 cards and costing me a bunch or even putting me out and this is getting old to the point i'm fixing to hang up playing for awhile cause i'm finding myself getting upset or even alittle mad and i'm the type that if doing something makes you mad then don't do it and sinse this is a game it should be enjoyable and when it becomes unenjoyable then it's time for a break so i would like for you folks to help me out here if you all will? cause i'd like to keep playing and not have to take a break cause i do like playing...

People will chase, and sometimes, they'll catch. All you can do is charge them more than the odds of catching justify. This concept is called pot odds. There has been a ton written about it; just look around the forum and the web. Very basically, it means bet enough so that over time, you'll win more when they chase and miss than you'll lose when they chase and catch.

you can't help the fact that people will chase and catch. that will be inevitable. what you want to do is make them pay to make their drawing hand, and make the bets to the point where long term it is a losing proposition for them to draw out on you. i recommend a pot sized bet, or even over betting the pot in order to accomplish this.

One other thing you will want to start to look for is recognizing when your opponent is chasing a draw and not putting any significant number of chips into the pot if one of the cards they were chasing hits. If you are still paying them off when they catch their miracle card, even if you are making the right bets you may still be a long run loser.

Some people are going to call no matter what you bet, thats true. The key is getting them to pay you more than you pay them. This can be done by trying to put them on a draw, and then making it a bad math decision to make the call. Then if the draw connects, having the discipline to muck without 'keeping them honest' all the time.

i.e. if you think your opponent is 4 flushing, make sure that there is no way he is going to get 4 to 1 on the bet he has to call. Unless you are trapping with something bigger than a flush

Keep in mind that you don't have to bet all that much to deny someone the odds to call. Betting 1/2 to 2/3 of the pot forces your opponent to call against direct odds for most draws. People will often call due to the implied odds. THEY ARE ONLY GETTING IMPLIED ODDS IF YOU PAY THEM OFF WHEN THEY HIT.

Sorry for the caps, but that's a pretty important point.

Great point. I recommended a larger size bet just due to the fact that I am assuming that this is lower limit, where 1/2 pot sized bets seem less effective.

are you playing at the micro limit ring games? people on there tend to chase because most of them don't even know what pot odds or implied odds are and are encouraged by the fact that they only need to put in a relatively small amount ($0.50?) to hit their card. i have a theory that people do this mostly for the momentary emotional high they get when they hit their draw even if they know they probably won't get paid off
