I only play No Limit Texas Holdem tournaments and I don't play other types of poker. I think the more you focus on one thing, the more successful you will be at it. Do others agree or disagree? What are the benefits of playing different types of poker?

Playing the other games can help your holdem creativity. It can help improve your reads. I agree with the notion of accumulating some experience with holdem before venturing off to Omaha or others, but sooner rather than later, sampling the other games, imo, will improve one's proficiency with holdem.

Follow your desires. Do not limit yourself.
Any variation of poker requires enough experience, knowledge and ability to play.
A person who plays Omaha and Hold'em equally well - this is an indicator of the skill of the player, his versatility.

I tend to agree - playing one type of poker, and focussing on being the best you can be at it, is probably the best way to go.

The idea that you need to be good at every form of the game to consider yourself a true poker player is an outdated idea IMO. It goes back to the days of the road gambler, long before the internet, where you played whatever game you had access to in town that night. So you needed to be at least passable at everyting, from stud to omaha to deuce-seven, because if you weren't you weren't going to get a game that night.

Ever since online poker came along though, that hasn't been an issue any more. You've got access to pretty much unlimited action in whatever game format you like. So if you're happy playing just the one game, by all means do that.

You need to be able and understand the basics of all forms of poker because it is in tournament poker that this knowledge is needed.

Not necessarily. It makes you very variable player if you can play different formats. You will have an advantage if you can develop good skills in at least 2-3 games.

I think it's better to focus on one type of poker and play the option that gives you the most pleasure.

I agree with you, when I was younger I did several things at the same time kkkk this was not good. In poker I play other variants just for fun and to know the system of each variant, but my focus is Hold'em at the limit.
We are together.

Thanks for all the replies! Very interesting some agree :) others don't. I'm going to stick to just playing Texas holdem no limit tourneys for now as I still think I have a lot to learn (been playing for around 2 years) and I don't want to get confused.

I agree, especially because the dynamics are quite different in no limit holdem alone, depending on stakes, players per table, tournament player pool, etc.

The other poker formats are entirely different worlds. You have to invest plenty of time to master.

Perhaps one of benefits playing other poker games is that fewer sharks there. I mean - it is a commonplace to have sharky pools in pokerstars. I guess with games other than no limit holdem that might not be the case.

I do not know how others, I play different kinds of poker, I run a Hold'em tournament in one window and in the other I launch a cash game Omaha, and for me other games do not interfere, just for me it distracts from a boring and long tournament and I normally concentrate on the tournament and Omaha or another game does not bother me

I only play No Limit Texas Holdem .... for me it is the type of poker that I like the most ... and if I only focus on this poker mode I am sure that I will learn every day more and more ... however not only game tournaments also play cash table, sit and go,

Hold em is the hardest variant of poker to gain an edge in because of the knowledge of the player pool. Omaha is the next hold em if this game is going to keep growing, so if you want an easier way of making this your profession I would study at least both of them. Omaha will make you better in holdem because of the bigger ranges and it's a ton of fun.

I agree to focus on a unique style to be able to dominate but from time to time for fun I end up playing an omaha ^^

Agree if u focus on a single type of poker game u may be more succesfull on long term but u might consider take new challenges and opportunities to improve your skills just avoiding monotony and keep your brain active .The rules and strategies are similar only your abilility to adapt to different players and dynamic of the games may be the key to succeed.

I play poker of course mostly in no-limit Texas hold'em, but like 8 games, I was able to rest from unlimited. I think it helps me not only to entertain, but also to hone skills. Good luck!

An old phrase is 'Jack of all trades, master of none', i.e. the more you specialise the better you become.
