Hey what's up everyone I have a question about bet sizing and is there/should there be a difference between tournament and cash games?

I've been playing cash online for a few years but want to venture out and expand my horizons into tournament play. I found a weekly free tournament to play at a local pub to get a feeling of how the game is different than cash but I'm still not really sure about bet sizing. One thing I've noticed is the huge amount of limped pots! Keep in mind it's a free tourney and it's pretty soft but I feel like I'm a mad man for betting 3bb utg and then being told I bought the pot? Really!?!?

Any information or reading material you can suggest would be great. Thanks!

I would say in cash games play more conservative with your bets and raises since the money is coming directly from your bankroll.

Cash games and the start of tournaments are simialr when when deep. Pre flop its ok to bet 3x the BB but once you get to mid tournaments then its 2-2.5x and have to be careful of 3bets not to commit yourself too much in tournaments.

Sometimes instead of 3Betting, its shove or Fold when you get down to 15-25 BBs

Thanks Rhom. I've been watching some Tourneys on tv and the sizing does seem a bit smaller. A lot more 1/2 pot size vs 3/4's and 3bets seem lighter too. But tv only shows the big hands and the deeper stacks/later stages play and shows little
if any early stage play. I'm just wondering if the way you and I are practicing with our cash games would be transferable into tournament play.

In cash games is all about getting money and in tournamnet play the most important thing is not to loose all your chips!

I'd prefer not to lose all my chips in a cash game too! 😋

Its similar especially if its the start of a rebuy tournament.

Only problem if its a freezeout you have to more careful with your chips as once you are out thats it.

Online tournaments- as you can just register for another one then at the start its ok to play alittle looser whereas if you travel to a casino then you are less likely to take flips and it becomes more a game of survival.

Key difference is the dynamics later in a tournament as its all about shoving and folding in the right spots

Professional players probably feel exactly the opposite of this. If felted, they can always re-buy, which -with some exceptions - is not the case in tournaments. Bottom line, if the fear of losing keeps you from playing properly, the game is probably too large. That said, some of Ed Miller's strategies are based on taking advantage of risk adverse regulars; so, nothing is absolute.

Cheers!

An important component of tournaments is blind stealing after about 2/3 of the players are elliminated. Since, it will happen to many players that you will not have many blinds to play, it is important to bet so you discourage other players when you have a good hand, and small bet when you want some action.
