Anyone have a good article or video about bet sizing? Feel like it is a major leak in my game and leads to me getting bad beats and sucked out.

Thanks in advance!

I believe there is an article about bet sizing in the "Strategy Articles" section of this site.

The standard raise is usually 2.5 to 4 or 5 times the big blind, but it all depends on the table dynamics and what you are trying to accomplish. Preflop, you will want to observe typical raises and go from there. At one table you may need to raise 6BB to get anyone to fold, and at others you may be able to accomplish the same with a 3BB raise.

Postflop is an entirely different and more complex issue and completely depends on the situation. Generally speaking, bet around half the pot or more up to the full pot. Betting more than is in the pot is necessary sometimes (facing a short stack that would be pot committed if calling a standard raise, shoving over the top of an all-in to eliminate the weaker/drawing hands, etc), but in a standard hand it is not recommended. Read up and get to know pot odds very well. It will help you to further adjust your bet sizing.

As you'll read many times around here, it depends.

The size of a bet is measured in relationship to the pot (not preflop of course) So if someone is betting more than 70% of the pot, it is actually a big bet and is usually asociated to a bluff or a really strong hand, a half pot bet is a medium size bet, and they are usually the bets we make to add value to our hands, and less than half the pot is a small bet, and it usually indicates strength, if the player who has the iniciative bets it.

try to bet half the pot or 65% of the pot, cause they are the most regular bets, until you get used to the spots you wanna put more or less chips in the pot

Anywhere from 50-75% of the pot is fine, and i would advise betting more on draw heavy boards.

There isn't a one size fits all rule. I like betting 2/3 to 3/4. But against moron calling stations I sometimes bet more than the pot.

Against observant players I try to keep the bet sizing fairly consistent.

Don't min-bet or min-raise, except against crazy guys who shove against any sign of weakness. I.e. these guys think you're a fish and think their mid-pair must beat your fishy min-bet.

I don't know any reads, but why not state some situations? and it all depends on what you want to represent. VERY generally a standard normal bet...whatever that is...is 50 to 70 percent of the pot. but like I said, what are you trying to do or represent?do you want the call or raise or fold?

I think we could help you out better if you gave a couple of specific situations.

to make it easy, let's assume you and all your active opponents are deepstacked.

what you want is your bet sizing to be consistent; so generally regardless of the actual strength of your hand if you make a bet on a certain street it should be consistent.

preflop
in the early tourney levels you can raise between 2-5x the BB
in the mid levels you won't usually want to raise more than 2.5-3.5x the BB
in the later levels min raises and 2.5x raises are more common

if there is a limper ahead of you and you want to raise, raise more than your usual standard, for instance if you normally raise 2.5x and there is 1 limper raise about 3.5x. If there are 2 limpers raise about 4-4.5x

flop
on the flop, we'll talk in % of the pot.

It is pretty standard for flop bets to be about 50-70% of the pot.
betting 2/3 the pot usually denies your opponent proper odds, while still making your C-bets profitable.

turn
Usually the turn is a little bit smaller % of the pot, and about twice your previous bet. maybe 40-50% of the pot

river
Same with the river bet, usually a little smaller % of pot, a little bigger than the turn bet. Except river bets can really be all over the place from tiny to huge, but often if you are going for real value you'll bet about 40% of the pot on the river.

This all gets way more complicated when you have to think about effective stack sizes...but let's master the basics first!

Pre-flop if you had something good on hand bet 3 big blinds, thats the optimal raise.
In flop - ~5-7big blinds.
After that look to situation and think - Is there reason to bluff? If you hadn't catch a goot combinations.
