Noticed villains doing this a lot recently. My feeling is that the checked turn is a trap move to imply weakness and try to encourage a bluff/steal. What do others think?

It can be, but if you assume it is every time, you will be incorrect a substantial proportion of the time. It's not hard to come up with about other possible reasons why people might take this line, especially when you remember that they don't have to be good reasons since people will make plays for poor and mediocre ones as well.

True enough. I'm always so vague when I post things on here. I'll try and use the HH more but 888 is such a chore for finding the individual hands.

TPTK can take this line to pot control.

Villains that miss the flop but cbet anyway, give up on the turn then hit something on the river can also take this line. Even if they don't hit anything on the river they can take another stab when you show weakness by checking the turn back.

...Anything from air to TPTK to the nuts can take this line, so like Arj said you can't assume one line will always or even often mean the same thing. You need to incorporate more information like what the board is and what both of your positions are to have any chance of hand reading.
