Hello all,

I often see tables of the 10 or 20 best hands preflop.

Do similar charts exist for, say, the best 15% hands, or the best 35% hands, etc?

Are you talking about the % as in % of hands preflop as it would relate to a players range?

If so, look at the figure below.

You're welcome. It's a program called Poker Stove. Just google poker stove and you can download it for free. It's a cool little tool to play around with and it's pretty easy to use.

One thing to note: if a player raises 10% of his hands and he is positionally aware he will not be raising with the 10% of hands listed above. I open fold a lot of those hands highlighted on that 10% chart when UTG, but I will raise with a lot of hands not selected on the chart when I'm on the button...

Yeah pokerstove's "Top X%" of hands doesn't really correspond to the hand range of most villains with that %. But playing with it can definitely give you a good/better idea of what plausible ranges are for various %'s.

It doesn't really invalidate the chart though. If a villain is know to play 20% of his hands, I might use, say, the 10% chart when he is in bad position, but the 35% chart when his position is good.

What Wes is saying is that the ranges shown are not the hands most players would actually select as a 35% distribution or whatever % it is.

A realistic 10% UTG distribution is something like:
{22+, AQo+, AJs+, 76s-98s, A3s-A5s}

A 35% range would be more like:
{22+, Ax, K2s+, Any two broadway, 54s+, 64s+, 74s+}

When plugging 35% or 10% into pokerstove and looking at that range, it includes a lot more offsuit junky hands or dominated broadway hands that real opponents aren't going to have in their range too often, while leaving out the suited connectors and small pairs that players will include.

Lets not forget the super fish that have a VPIP of 40+ and show up in EP with 94o. I always wonder why they fold anything if they'll play those hands in EP.
