Hi All,

As I have been reading here and around the net, I keep coming across people saying they study their hands. How do I do this? What am I looking for? Or what questions should I be asking myself when I study my hands?

Any help would be great!

Good Luck out there!

1) You learn something (from books, videos, ...)
2) You play, trying to incorporate what you've learned in your game
3) you look at your hands and see how you succeed with #2.
4) you decide what to do next

study your statistics. Hold'em manager or poker tracker will help you to collect and save it. Look for the hands that you lost. Study the reason - a bad game or just a stroke (this also happens).

Assign your opponent a range and then evaluate your equity on that board texture using equilab or pokerstove. Your opponent might have been super strong this hand, but you may have made the correct play against their range.

I review hands every morning as I drink my coffee. I look for where Im leaking chips like loose calls. I look for mistakes I make from playing to fast. I also look to see how I could have gotten more chips from hands I won. I look to see if I bet to much on strong hands, if I bet to aggresively on marginal hands when I should be check calling, and I look to see if Im over valueing hands that are not as good as I thought they were at the time.

Study hands IMMEDIATELY after a session. You can learn so much faster by instant feedback. Learn to use equilab software and make some kind of hand analysis routine. Check some articles or videos about how to analyse hands

You can also go to a fortune teller to study your hands and tell you what happened in the past (example: few fingers missing: 30% chance it's of carpenter).
The good ones have a crystal ball as well, to tell you what will happen in the future.
In the end, the best result is from reviewing and reflecting yourself.

Looking at hands straight after a session in my experience isn't very efficient. Your mindset is still that of the session. It is best to review the next day after some rest when you can break them down and look with fresh eyes.

Studying hands comes down to understanding position play. How are your SB/BB game? How is your reputation when trying to steal while on the button? How is your early position game? This is something I am trying to make everyone aware of.
