Ok. The name of this thread may be misleading. I have been playing online poker since 2005 fairly steadily. I won 20,000 a few years back in the bovada(bodog at the time) 100k guaranteed. I have won a few random tournaments here and there on other sites, but for the past few years have never cashed more than a few hundred. I also never deposit more than around 30 at a time and seems like I lose a lot more than I win. Now I will never consider it impossible that I just suck at poker, but without sounding conceded, I have studied the math, am fairly disciplined, and have a ton of experience. What I have felt for a while is that my problem might be the very small bankrolls I have been starting with. Unfortunately, my financial limits are not really in a position to be raised, so I guess my question is whether it is better to not play for a while and save up a big payroll, or continue playing huge tournaments a couple times a week in a hope to hit it big again and go from there. I do have the dream of at least attempting this as a living when I get out of the military. Thank you.

How long do you still have on your ADSC?

If you have a little time this is what I would suggest....

1) Spend time studying
I think you'd do well to read up on tournament styles specific to what you want to play, 1table SnG's, MTT SnG's, MTT Tournaments, etc
I'll PM you some places to gather solid info

2) Learn about bankroll management
If you can't raise your financial limits, then work within those limits. I think you'd be better off to still be actively participating in tournaments even if it's at a small stakes buy in rather than sitting on the sidelines reading about everything. It's great to study and all, but if you're not actually playing in any games that's not being a poker player, that's being a student of the game.

3) Get active on the forums
Find other players who are doing well in the tournaments you play in. Reach out to them, try to network and find out what's going through their mind in various situations. Having friends who participate makes for some great learning as you bounce ideas off one another.

I could go on a long tangent on this stuff, but I'll wrap it up and if you have questions regarding specific things please ask

i don't get why you'd want to build up a br by not playing. that won't improve your game. reading all the books and posts on forums will help a small percentage. continuing to play is the better bet while reading books and posts on forums. rather than playing in big mtts once in awhile, my suggestion is to start grinding. once you're consistently beating that game, then start moving up. it's a slow ride, but it'll improve your game in the long run.

You can continue playing with the small bankroll but instead of playing bigger buying tournaments try playing micro sit n go's and micro to small buyin tournaments. I would suggest not playing cash games with such a small bankroll and just concentrate on above mentioned tournaments. Strictly play in the limits that your bankroll allows you to and then you have a better chance.:hmmmm:

Did you notice its different now after black Friday?

Anyway, online poker is really a long term plan thing.

Aside from huge tourneys, how about adding also micros. You can spread your BR just for the purpose of joining many micro tourneys.

I've been in the NAVY for 6 and a half years and got 3 years left. Actually I spent the last 4 and a half years on a submarine in groton. I see you play at mohegan so I figured I'd mention that. But thanks for the reply. I'm gonna try playin some micro games over on betonline. I'm boycotting the merge network at the moment anyways, for screwing me out of a 33 dollar coupon by automatically registering me in a tournament without even informing me. I won a 2.20 buy in to win a 33 dollar coupon and then went to get my daughter diapers. When I get back half my stack is gone in a tournament I didn't register for. They tell me that's their policy and won't give me my money back even though I've been a loyal customer for years. So, I'm done with them. Anyways, thanks for the replies, and to answer that last question, the major difference I notice since black friday is how hard it is to find big prizepools without putting up a huge buyin.
