I am a newbie, so hopefully I am putting my first post in the right place :)

There are loads of poker books on the market, and a lot of them are quite expensive!

What is the best poker book to teach a beginner how to beat online micro stakes NLHE?

Any advice you can give me would be greatly appreciated!

Hello! I started with free video lessons, watched the game of professionals and trained in freerolls. Try and you, can to determine your style and what you want from the game of poker will be understandable. And then think about books or paid lessons.

Hi. A lot of people seem to like The Grinders Manual by Peter Clarke. It's pretty recent and written with a focus on online 6-max NHLE cash games.

Hello diadiavalik! Thank you for replying!

Which free video lessons do you recommend? There are a whole lot of videos out there so I don't know where to start (the videos would have to be in English).

Hello ccres! Thank you for replying!

I just looked up The Grinders Manual by Peter Clarke on Amazon, £39.66 is a whole lot of cash for a digital book (I'm on a micro budget), but I am not going rule out buying it, it certainly has a lot of 5 star reviews!

Does anybody else have any suggestions?

I started with the video lessons from poker stars. Then I looked for free lessons from different players on YouTube, I think it should be in English.

The best practice in the game is freerolls to learn how to control and your bankroll!

Are there any specific players on YouTube you would recommend?

Has anybody read "Harrington on Online Cash Games: 6-Max No-Limit Hold 'em" by Dan Harrington? Is this a book that people would recommend?

I also saw on amazon that Jonathan Little has a new book coming out called "Mastering Small Stakes No-Limit Hold'em: Strategies to Consistently Beat Small Stakes Poker Tournaments and Cash Games" has anybody read it? It isn't out in the UK yet, but is this one worth considering?

I remember reading the Harrington book years ago, and I recall thinking it was pretty good. I don't remember anything more specific, though. Sorry. It has been a long time since I read it, or since I focused on NLHE at all.

Can't wait to give some of these books a read!

As for video lessons, a quick youtube search of "how to beat microstakes" pulls up a few good channels. Some of the first videos that come up go right into game play, while others outline the basic ranges that seem to be profitable for their play style and against the others in microstakes.

Hope this helps!

Ok, thanks rari458, I'll give it a try! But out of all the poker gurus and players on YouTube, are there any that are stand outs in your opinion? I just don't want to pick any bad videos or learn any bad habits etc.

Harrington On Online Cash Games - 6-Max No-Limit Hold 'em

Ok! I just ordered this one from Amazon.

Can anybody recommend any books on winning online tournaments rather that cash games? I won some free tickets for pokerstars tournaments and would like to give them a try!

Still hoping for some more recommendations for books about online cash games though!

Blackrain79

Hi,

I started playing at low-stakes cash poker a few years ago. I was struggling alot !!
Then I found the website www.blackrain79.com and his book.
It helped alot for me ... I can say that i'm winning at poker right now.
I can't say it will help everybody because every pro-player has his own theories and so but it helped me for sure !!!

For no limit hold'em tournaments, I recommend the originals: Harrington on Hold'em Volume 1 and 2 (3 is also good but you can live without it).

If you really understand those books, you can adjust to pretty much any tournament situation you find yourself in. They also include a lot of fundamentals that you "should" have a grasp of, if you are going to play tournaments (gap theory, M, etc.).

There are other books out there. Some focus on specific formats like online single table tournaments, online multi-table tournaments, turbos, and so on, but none of them do as good a job as the originals. Yes, you will have to make some adjustments, but Harrington does a decent job of explaining when to adjust and how in his books.

Edit: it isn't like Harrington is the only great author, but he is fantastic and, most importantly, he does a good job of teaching you to understand why to do something. He doesn't just tell you what to do. He is helping you learn to think about the game correctly.

Thanks Vinnie!

What is better - the original Harrington tournament books that you mention, or his more recent book "Harrington on Modern Tournament Poker: How to Play No-Limit Hold 'em Multi-Table Tournaments", should I stick with the originals?

I haven't read the new one, to be honest. But, I would think that would be good. Go ahead and get it. The new one might be just what you want.

I was not aware that Harrington had come out with a few new ones. I will have to give those a read. Glad I checked out this thread. I also want to say I love Harrington on holdem volume 3. I often refer back to that to "play" through a few hands to get my mind back on track.
