Hello,
This is a beginners questions asked by one of my students:
Here it goes:
He was just playing a tournie and all four jacks hit the board. There were 3 players left and one went all in, while the other two folded on the river.

Was this the 4 of a kind strength governed by the kicker? I did not think it would be because he cannot have more than one four of a lind, well apart from this situation.
thanks,
:)

Well yes if the flop come JJJJ2 or whatever... You still need a kicker because hand strength is run off 5 cards!

So JJJJQ is not as good as JJJJA! Because the Ace is a higher card then the Queen!

Yip,you would have to take the best 5 cards. If the board shows JJJJA then it will be a split pot.

If the board showed JJJJ2 then the person holding the highest card will win because the 2 would fall away and that card would replace it.

when it comes to 4 cards of a kinds, it's just a simple question, who has the higher cards. and the bluffing is all around that issue

The highest kicker would make up the 5 cards. So A2 would be better than KK. Seems a bit unfair but that is how it works.

well it's quite obvious, when it comes to four of a kind only the one extra cards matters...

Decision is made on 5 cards so 4 of a kind on the board will be decided by highest kicker. However it is only 5 cards so A2 is the same as AK.
