Greetings CS community.

I have been playing poker as an amateur for some time both online and live.
I have never been into any kind of readings/tutorials/books etc.
Could anyone please suggest some kind of literature for a total beginner in poker art?
Thanks in advance.

All the best,
Z

Power Hold'em Strategy by Daniel Negreanu is a pretty good one, helped me a lot.

For tournament poker I recommend Harrington on Hold'em. Some people say it's outdated but I don't think so. Maybe on one or two points at most. He really explains in good detail with good examples so you really understand what he's talking about.

I second very good book which helped me a lot though he´s a complete nit. You don´t only learn how to play your cards but to manipulate your image.

For a beginner my advice is very simple read and watch as much you can about poker. In the beginning TIGHT IS RIGHT. I use HM2 which is very good but can be complicated for a beginner so you can either get the trial period for free and learn how to use it or you can try out the HUD from Jivaro which is free and very simple.

Good luck brah

If you are really newbie, start first at those beginner books.

Same time, you can read articles online.

I recommend Lee Jones Winning Low Limit Holdem and Little Green Book by Phil Gordon. Both general books and very easy read.

What type of games do you want to play? Cash/Tourney/Sng? Holdem/Stud/Omaha? Someone recommended Power Holdem Strategy by Negreanu...it's a good book but only the section on Small ball... the rest is not so good... The harrington books on cash and tourneys are good...Supersystem is a bit outdated but is good ...Once you define what games you want to play you'll probably get better recommendations. for some of the lesser played games.. Ken Warren's books are mainly on FLHE

No. For a complete beginner? I don't think so.

You can start by improving your choice of literature... ie. don't go with that Negreanu book. It is a HUGE waste of paper. (his earlier books are better than PowerHoldem... especially for a beginner/novice)
For tournament poker I recommend Harrington on Hold'em. Some people say it's outdated but I don't think so. Maybe on one or two points at most. He really explains in good detail with good examples so you really understand what he's talking about.
This series would be a great 'next' pick after reading Phil Gordon's Little Green Book. Nevermind it being outdated... it's still good for providing a decent foundation in nlhe tournament play

Really good series (although I was disappointed with volume 3). Only after OP's played for awhile & read some other stuff first.

Sounds like OP is talking about NoLimit Holdem (just my assumption) & is just getting started.

Greetings.

Thank you all for your kind replies & sorry for being absent from the thread.

I'd like to consider myself a tournament player of NLHE but PL Omaha is quite appealing to me as well (probably because of it's lively nature)
Can someone prove me wrong that cash games aren't that good & advisable to begin with poker?
Since I haven't got actual funds (so far) I am forced to play alot freerols but the gambling there is... well you know it by yourself.
Nevertheless I have managed to win a ticket to Weekly Sunday on pokerstars while playing against 1700 players recently :)
I am planning to deposit some money in the near future and try out playing tournaments alongside SNG maybe.

P.S. this might be offtopic but could you please share your opinion about fast cash tables like zoom, rush, snap.
I had some fun there with real money I won in freerol but it's still hard for me to quit on time and consequently I lost everything :)

All the best,
Z

I would like online poker to become a part of my earnings but I'm not the type of a player who is gaining money by systematical and strict gameplay. I cannot see myself playing with 17 open windows while observing % statistics etc etc. What I love the most is playing in real life but let's leave this aside for now. I hope I was able to clear out the image a little.

I 100% agree with Poker Orifice.

1st stop is Phil Gordon, then probably Harrington. Negreanu probably AFTER that. I know he's a hero and all, but he's not that good of a writer - a lot needs to be read between the lines on his stuff so you really need a good foundation first.

Try the Harrington On Holdem Trilogy. They'll give you a good strong starting point to work from. The third book is a workbook so there's no new knowledge there but if you work through it you'll learn a lot. If you want to play Lag then the Smallball section of the Negreanu book is good but is probably a bit beyond a beginners strategy. Whichever way you decide to go though, just take the books as a starting point and analyse what works for you and what doesn't after 1K or so hands and adjust appropriately.
