Im told I play well for a new player. But I keep making stupid mistakes that makes me lose money :(

My question is, is it normal to make mistakes when you are just a beginner?

And since you raised x6 on the button, this i usually a gooooood sign that you had a nice hand, and I would fold, and the 56 called, Thats great for you! He called with a horrible holding, especially being out of position ( he is 1st to act).
So you really just got super unlucky. Aces are not holdin up like they used to.....

( walks away )

Moved to Learning Poker. :)

Anyways, of course it's normal to make mistakes as a beginner. It's perhaps not 'normal' per se for an experienced player to make mistakes but it still happens often!

You improve indirectly from making mistakes anyway, so it's nothing to be ashamed of. As long as you can identify your mistakes and make sure they don't happen again in the future, you're set. The best way to start going about doing that is reviewing your sessions and posting hands that you're not sure about on the forums.

Everybody makes mistakes at the beginning. The important thing is that you learn from them.

Don't assume that because you lost a particular hand, you made a mistake. Conversely, don't assume that you played a hand well because you won.

For your benefit of the OP, the top newbie mistakes in poker as listed by the opinons of all us fine fish at CC.

  • Being impatient. Forcing action without good ground to stand on.
  • Being results oriented - "I lost the hand so I must have done something wrong" or "I won the hand so I must have played it right"
  • Not knowing where you made your mistake (assuming there was one). Many players assume they screwed up on the flop or turn and many times they screwed up just being in the hand to begin with.
  • Thinking you are a better player than you actually are (newbie or not).
  • To be continued by someone else.... :D

justifying bad play rather than taking advice on the chin,
trying to put players on a single hand,
complaining about bad players

Just to add to MediaBlitzs common mistakes:

-Taking offence when better palyers tell you that you played a hand wrong
-Open-limping
-Calling pre too much
-Completing from SB
-Min-betting
- Bet sizing in general is usually completely appaling with no appreciation for stack sizes
-Not having Auto top-up on
-Buying in deep and not knowing how to adjust to 250BB
-not adjusting right against opponents
-not knowing how to play effective stacks
- lack of positional awareness
-Shortstacking
-Only playing their own hand
-Thiking in terms of hands insteads of ranges, never put someone on a specific hand.
-Not thinking about their perceived range
-Not having a plan about what to do if re-raised when they raise
-Not having a plan when they call turn aboout what they will do on river
-Not understanding why they are betting , e.g. I have middle pair and it's checked to you IP on river so betting it for the sole reason of well I have something
-Not considering equity against ranges
-Running at like 25/3
-Thinking 40bb/100 is standard and that yo uare now an amazing player for going on a sick heater
-Not analysing sessions.

I can think of more but that's enough for now.

I only ask because if beginners didn't make mistakes, wouldn't that make them experts?

Thinking that it could be not normal for a beginner to make mistakes seems counter intuitive...

How can you tell if you made a mistake?

Hint: Winning or losing the hand is not necessarily indicative of good or bad play.
