I've been playing online poker for a little while but have been very unsuccessful with it. I'm playing for fun rather than taking it seriously. But obviously want to make money rather than lose it... I have always deposited what I would use for that session rather than build a bankroll up and play with small percentages of it. And if I win loads id go straight up into higher games, so I'm always playing with all of my bankroll. I want to change this so would appreciate it if I could get some tips to maintaining a more controlled bankroll and obviously not losing it all in one Bs hand. Thank you and apologies for an all over the place post as its my first one :)

It sounds like you need to work on your self control, along with your bankroll management. Just because you win enough money to move up in level, does not mean you have the skill needed to move up. You need to play the micros for awhile, until your game improves and you build a bankroll. If you're play cash games, you should only be playing the $0.01/$0.02 tables. Ideally, you want your bankroll to be at the very least, 10 times the maximum buyin of the table you're playing.

For cash games we would ideally like to have no less than 20-25 max BI's for any given level. For MTT's I would recommend no less than 100BI's though if it's small field then you can go less than that.

Dont move up until you are comfortably beating your current level over a decent sample size (say 10k+ hands) and have at least 40 buy ins for the next level.

Sounds like you already know kind of. freerolls can help: If you waste sooo much time and effort making sooo little, ya might not raise stakes sooo fast.

Good luck. The humility in your question will get you much help on CardsChat.

Play with measure! Play a small part of your bankroll, like 10%. Sometimes you will win and sometimes you lose money!
