What about playing a tight cash game strategy with the purpose of using the winnings as entry fees for MTT's? It seems to me that playing a lot of MTT's is costly and without a top five finish, you will eventually go broke. The goal would be to score a big win in an MTT.

I used my winnings from HU sng's to enter the 1/4th million at PS and a SCOOP event, so yeah you can use your cash game/sng profit to play MTT's.
To play MTT's only you'd need a good sized BR I'd say 50-100 BI's depending on how comfortable you are and how tough the field is.

But mostly the reason people don't play MTT's only is because you need a lot of time to complete one and swings will be heavy. Personally I think of my grind at the HU sng's as practice, MTT's to me are a way to put your practice into play.

I have used exactly that method to build up substantial bankrolls at several sites. I start out with an initial deposit of (at most) $100. I play in a small-stakes cash game until I am up $10, then use that to enter a $10 MTT.

I repeat the process until I hit a final table, and that will then boost my BR up into the $500+ bracket - easily enough to carry on playing $10 MTTs until I win again and can move up in stakes.

If you can constantly make MTT buyin's playing cash games, and cannot sustain youself playing MTT's then maybe you should consider sticking to the cash games ?

MTT regs. (ie. guys putting in volume, poker coaches, etc.) suggest having 100buyins. Others say 50. Wouldn't go below 50.
