If you are still at the stage that you quickly took $40 off, you are not ready to gamble for money (at least your own money).
If you are financially insecure, you should not play (scared to lose anything), it affects your play and allows others to take advantage of you.
Learn more throw reading books, articles, watching free videos, mentor with a coach or friend, and then set aside $100 or more than you don't need to pay the grocery bills, or oil changes, and play with the understanding this is poker money ONLY. Grow it and have a plan (especially if you need a revenue stream), if you double your money, take half, or less, for yourself and leave the extra money to grow the bankroll higher and maybe this will allow you to move up in stakes (if ready and dominating where you start). Again, if you are dominating, stay there and grow it more, while you can, easily, don't be in a hurry. And when you do go up, do it in short bursts, see how it goes, if you lose your way, drop back down before you lose your bankroll or significantly impact it. Keep doing this until you get comfortable at the higher level and your bankroll starts to increase there, adding more time to your new level as you go. Eventually you will be crushing it up there and when your bankroll grows enough for the next step, you do the same limited time and get your footing. All along you are taking a small % of winnings for your own use, but the majority of winnings is growing that bankroll.
Always drop down when the going gets tough and you ever feel over matched or the bankroll becomes in jeopardy, and return to domination at that level until you are ready to move up (slowly), again. gl
