I started from freerolls on FT and have cashed out a few hundred. Keep a small bankroll there. Started from a $10 stake on PS and have cashed out another few hundred. Have a decent bankroll to play with here. Built from a freeroll cash on Players Only, cashed out another grand or so. Still have a small bankroll there.

Its possible. Patience and bankroll management.

I started by placing in a freeroll a few years ago that netted me $6. The beginning was very slow and frustrating playing $2 NL tables until I found my game. When I stared playing Limit cash games my BR started to grow faster, until about $400 where I stopped playing well (I was also trying to get up to .5 $1) so I gave up for a while. Since the beginning of December though I have built it up to just over 1k playing Sit N Goes. My advice to you is just use good BR management. I have gone broke a few times before this from playing outside my limits and I have to tell you, there is nothing less motivating than having to go back to grinding the freerolls for 12c after 4 hours. Also keep trying different games until you find something that works for you and when you find it, stick with it. There are many more games than NL holdem cash games and not every one is good for every player.

I deposited $50 on PS, never got below $30, and built it to $1k in 4 months.

I tried to deposit $200 on UB, but it failed. They gave me $10 (I guess to keep me interested) and I built that to about $400 before I deposited $50 (so I could cash out if I wanted to).
I rarely play there though, so it was two years before I cleared $1k there.

I have never deposited on FT, though I did trade $75 to play the CC games there. I don't know how long it took to get to $1k, but I do remember that I stalled out at $900 for months and months.

Once you have money, it's a lot easier to make money.

I got really lucky and did not use good bankroll management.

Got $6 in freerolls, chopped the CC real-money tourney (buy-in = $6), and then won a $4 rush tourney to go from $6 to ~$400 in a day lol. After that I have used good BRM to get up to about $1100, what I'm at now.

Again, I got really lucky and 99 out of 100 times I would've lost all of it doing this. Better to try to grind micro-stakes and move up using BRM.

I started playing nothing but freerolls. Cashed out twice for over 1K. It takes time and practice.

I've done it, so have lots of other people here and elsewhere.

The stories are usually very boring: variations on "I ground the lowest stakes games for lots and lots of hands until I had enough money to move up using proper bankroll management". That's certainly the case for me.

I'll just chime in with my boring story too, lol! In 3 months I've gone from $0 -> $400 through a combination of freerolls, free starting capital deals, and grinding 2/5nlhe + 2/5plo with rakeback and other bonuses. My free time these days is limited, so I try to keep my poker play at around 1 hour per day on average.

My personal golden rule in poker is to never make a deposit online from money I have not gotten for free or through poker play. Everything I earn from poker is just gravy, because I am playing simply because I enjoy the game. Quite honestly, I can still have fun playing poker even if it's just for play chips, and I think this goes a long way to helping me be less results-oriented overall. In my experience, the times when I've begun worrying about the money in a real-life context are the times when I end up off my A-game: at times timid, at other times spewing, and almost always vulnerable to breaking BRM and loss-chasing.

I played real money online poker for the first time about a year ago. I deposited $25 on FTP, and have never gone busto or redeposited. I steadily built it to several 100 mostly through grinding 9-man SnGs. I'm currently trying to move away from SnGs and concentrating more on cash games. BR growth is currently stagnant, as I've not been able to win as consistently at them yet (and PLO is being PLO...), but I think getting the hang of cash games will be worth it in the long run.

I made my second ever deposit on a new site earlier this month because I wanted to "expand my poker horizons", so to speak. Because I'm much more knowledgeable about poker now than I was a year ago--I know the games and stakes at which I'm almost certain to show a profit--I was happy to deposit significantly more than $25 this time around.

Started as a freeroll maniac (never deposited) & moved to micro level currently, but yes BRM is very, very important. I also find league play to help me not only in individual tourneys, but that monthly $ that I would get as well. Highest I've gotten is >$300, but I tend to be very conservative on my BRM. For those with game, but no funds there are staking sites out there, but that's another story...

I'm currently grinding out the $2 SnG's and enjoy it enough to get my feet wet. (I'm new to online although I've been playing live for a few years) I also assumed you can build BR much faster through Cash games but am not sure I'm ready to do that yet. Any suggestions other than just grind it out on the Micro stakes SnG's? Again, I'm new so I don't have a good story for OP but was just curious on OP/everyones opinions...good luck to ALL!

I deposited 20 dollars, lost it and then deposited another 20 dollars and got serious about learning the game. I am ~150 now. I've been stuck there for awhile due to game leaks, some life tilt etc. However, it can be done.

Like Oz said, discipline and bankroll management is the key. Also, to be honest, when you start so small it does take some luck. If I had it to do over again, I would deposit at least 50 so I would be properly bankrolled for 2NL at least.

One more thing, always realize that you have more to learn. If you can't beat 2nl or 5nl its because you have serious leaks in your game. It NOT because of all of the donks in your game. You want the donks in your game. :)

Good luck.

Haven't got a story to tell except I went broke 2 times and I think it's because I only deposited 30$ and I'm uncomfortable with the micros where you get frustraded for 5c at the end of the hour.

The next time I will not deposit anything less than 100$ and I think it'll help my game a lot being at least able to play comfortably on the .5 tables. It's difficult in both ways but I think it's a lot more difficult if you have a little BRM.

When I was playing regularly, I averaged well over $1000 in freeroll winnings a year. Certainly gives you enough of a bankroll to get you started with anything else. Just find some good ones (private/forum), and forget the FTP/PS public freerolls, which are completely pointless, in my opinion...

I'm up to about 120 after depositing 15 bucks. Would NOT have been able to do it without freerolls. I think I cashed around 30 bucks in the last CC freeroll too.

I made an incredible over 400 bankroll from freerolls, unfortunately I lost a big part of it so I decided to cash out. my recommendation would be to take every freeroll as if it was a wsop game, that will get you to numerous final tables.

Absolutely. My friend made a few hundred that way starting with freerolls. I deposited a couple months ago to help start my bankroll. Played some micro cash games and freerolls at first, then switched to micro SNGs while still playing the freerolls. I don't play very much each day (maybe an hour or two max if I'm not playing a freeroll) and I've more than doubled my BR. Like other posters have said, it takes time and patience. Play a bunch so you can rack up experience in various situations -- and enjoy the game too!

Ok i guess i'll brag here too. :D

Last year my friend transferred me $2 on PS.
I turned it into $315 in a little over a year.
I'm down to about $175 now after a bad month of february (moving up in stakes and making bad decisions).

But yeah, totally possible with good BRM and smart play.

I built my BR from 2 bucks I won at a FT free roll to about 6k now. Took me about 20 months. Now I'm slowly grinding my way to 10k, in order to try to complete the Ferguson Challenge. With a very small BR I think you do need a fair bit of luck at the beginning. I think starting off with 50 bucks, enough for 25 BIs at 2 NL, will make your life much easier.

On Feb. 1, I deposited at FTP and withdrew it on Feb. 27 after losing $45. I have been playing mostly freerolls and have made a little over $3 (all these were private/forum FRs) by winning a few cents here and a few cents there (atleast im taking money from FTP; also i play a work so no expenses for me).
Yesterday I played in three $1 + $.20 SitNGos, I lost the first one, placed 3rd in the second one ($1.80), and placed 1st in the third one ($4.50). This wasn't good BRM but I had get away from playing Freerolls.

I'm not winning much in the FRs but I can see that I'm making improvements in my game.

started from zero reached $450 so far, you need to try a training site and put together a game.
Bank Roll management is also key.
Start with you local country freeroll and those run by sites such as CC.
It is a grind but can be done.

There's alot of player on here if you look around the site, you'll find out somethings which sound Odd Next to Impossible to do but most have...For me, I did it last year, went from 0-5k in 2 weeks Do able, and there's another 2 players I know of on this Site one of which went from $100 To over $4 Million In 3 years, and another that went from 0-$100K In about 4 years, so I mean it's most likely do able...

The key is simple A) Do think (Which might sound odd), Don't think about the money as your money, but rather as investments. B) Don't go outside your BR level...

I mean I've been here for a while, I'd rather not say there names but there's alot of ppl on here that have done it...
