Are there any tricks out there that people can use at the table to figure out pot odds ... or something close to the true pot odds?
Something for a person who knows the game but is just starting to learn about pot odds.

Thank you for helping

size of pot over size of bet.

so, if the pot is 2$ and villain bet 1$. The size of the pot is now $3/ $1 (villains bet). so you are getting 3 to 1 odds to call.

Please let me know if i misinterpreted the question.

that is good information, thank you.
I think I asked the wrong question, I meant is there a way to figure out if I should or should not call/raise some hands (such as drawing to a straight after the flop) -- a quick way to do it while at the table?

oh, a really really basic way to look at it, could be the 4x2 rule. Basically, if after the flop you have 8 outs to a straight that will win you the hand you multiply by 4 and get your equity/ percentage to win, so in this case 32%. After the turn you multiply by 2.

Does that work for anything? If I flop 4 to a flush (leaving 9 outs) then is it 36% to win .... and 18% chance to win (or...'catch' the hand) on the river if it gets to that point?
Does it work if I were to flop 2-pair....drawing to a full house? having 4 outs?

does this trick work for 7 stud too (subtracting the other cards that can be seen?)

not for stud.

Yea, it works for any number of outs. I guess you can say, it is a rough estimate of how often you will hit

Okay so is there a way to join these odds with the choice of making a bet/raise/etc?

So if I flop 4 to the flush...leaving 36% chance to hit the flush....and the pot at the moment is $10 and my bet can be $2...i should actually 'raise' and bet $5....is that correct?

or...same as above, but the pot is $5...and my min bet is $5....i should fold--is that correct?

if I may ask another question about pot odds....if the pot has $5 in it and i bet $5...thats 1/1 so is that 100% or 50%? if I have a 70% chance of getting The Nuts on the river....do I bet $5 into a $5 total pot...or am I still not getting correct pot odds?

THANKS!!

Pot odds are usually considered when calling. So for example, if the pot is $25, and your opponent bets $5, you have 5/35=14% pot odds, so you have to win the hand more than 14% of the time. So if you were on the turn with a open-ended straight draw (~16% to make it), it would be profitable to call, but if you had a inside straight draw (~8% to make it), it would not be immediately profitable to call (you have to consider implied odds, tough).

Raising is more complex. When you raise, 3 things can happen: Your opponent folds and you win, your opponent calls and you win, and your opponent calls and you lose. Note that things can get even more complicated if you consider multiple opponents and raising sizes. There's no "quick trick" for considering a raise AFAIK, all you can do is do an EV calculation, which you hardly can do when playing.

In the case of raising where all your opponents would call and there was no difference in implied odds from any of your actions, a raise (of any amount) is profitable if you win the pot more often than your opponents, e.g., if there were 4 players in the table including you, you would have to win more than 1/4=25% of the time for a raise to be profitable.
