Friends,

I would like to have your opinion for this subject?
After a sequence of bad beats in paid MTTs and SNGs what is the best thing to do?

1) Just continue playing as it is just a matter of temporary variance and playing more MTTs and SNGs you will get sucess any time again and then recover the losses and confidence?

2) Stay out of the MTTs and SNGs and even freerolls for a while (please suggest the best "time out" in your opinion) and then return gradually?

3) Only play Freerolls for a period until you feel confident and lucky again and then return to play in MTTs and SNGs with your regular/usual average buy-in?

If you're on tilt, it's best to stop altogether until you get your head on straight. Continuing to play when on tilt will compound the variance problem with poor decision-making, chasing losses is one of the biggest risks to your bankroll.

Hi Propane,

I agree that on tilt the best thing is disconnect from the poker rooms and watch a movie or a soccer match on the TV or even go out to run o do something outdoor to recover the mind and body and the return to play after some time...

But in the case I was inquiring was about the situation when you control well the tilt and consider normal to suffer bad beats (like Today in the Freeroll of CC for member´s club) where I was in 12th with 17 remaining from 136 and then I received T-T and from the hi-jack position I moved allin and I was called by the CL at Small blind with A-8 off (8 of spades) and the flop rainbow with no A or 8 and with only one spade and my chances (probablilties of winning the hand) about 80% with only 3 outs for the opponent (A) or with more 2 spades in sequence (runner runner)...And that was the final of the hand (2 more spades runner runner) and GG in 17th when I was about to double my stack and possibly arrive in the FT in 4th or 5th place... And the point is that just before the "bubble" (hand for hand) for the ITM position I was in 15th and received KK and moved all-in from the buttom and the BB with AJ offsuit called and it happened the same thing (the opponent won the hand against me with a flush runner runner with 4 cards of hearts in the board without any A in order to complete the Flush with his J of hearts as I had no hearts in my KK)...! I just survived because I had almost 2 times the opponent´s stack but had to recover my chips in the following hands to finish ITM...
Amazing the 2 similar bad beats but I do not tilt with those bad beats...

My point is: It looks to be just a bad variance (a pontual absence of lucky) that I should ignore and play other MTTs and SNGs or I should wait a time (hours or a day) to play again?

Tks for your comments,

If you're on tilt, it's best to stop altogether until you get your head on straight. Continuing to play when on tilt will compound the variance problem with poor decision-making, chasing losses is one of the biggest risks to your bankroll.

If you're not tilted, then keep going. A losing streak caused by variance will turn around eventually, it sometimes seems like it will never end but that will be balanced out by games where you keep hitting the board and winning chips no matter what.

I mentioned tilt because losing your confidence or having negative expectations for the outcome of each hand (e.g. "well, I've got AK and 6BB and I should push, but I know I always lose with AK so I'm going to fold and wait") is also a form of tilt.

I think that you have to continue, but if the bad beats continue you have to stop for a while.

I have a book and write all my game. Me too I play in the freeroll all day long maybe playing like 15 and + game a day. If you mark each time you loose and win and the date you will be surprise when its happen and each time is the same . So dont play when the timing is not on your top. Play tight and always tight. Play loosse you gonna loose ton of money like a big rollercoaster.

I dont believe in losing days, but im sure they exists :D:D
at least for me, there are some days when nothing works, so i just quit playing the usual buy-ins and play some cheaper ones or some freerolls just for fun for the rest of the day. But be carefull with freerolls, they can really upset you if you decides to play them seriously.

We all go through times like this. You have two options - keep going and hope that your game will return to normal in the near future, or have a break until the bad memories are forgotten

If I lose several buy ins very quickly (usually from multiple bad beats) I try to take a break and go exercise. It always helps me cool off and I can continue playing later without being tilted.

From the moment you have decided to play MTT and SNGO, you must have a strategic and try to follow a stable course, so 1 is better.

Bad beats are only a problem if you let them become one. Just play the game and let variance work itself out. GL!

It's weird. I discovered yesterday its was my night of winning after one week of bad bad bad beat sooooooo finish playing 2:00 am and winning in my area poker pub and also in the money in a 500 gta games . lolllll so when you lose you lose and when you win you win thats it for me. Try tonight the same approach of the game if I'm in the same mode of timing. Poker is all timing and position.

If you think you are on tilt, then step away for at least a half hour (some people even advocate a whole day). Do something fun/relaxing and get your mind off the game for a bit. If you aren't on tilt and can logically chalk it up to bad variance, then keep playing, but maybe consider moving to a different game (e.g. if you were playing Sngs try some micro cash games) or even take some time to learn a different poker game (like PLO). Variance is part of the game, but bad beats can definitely affect you and how you deal with future spots, so just make sure your head is in the right place to play your best poker. Gl!

What tto do, what to do...

IF you understand poker theory and play a proper game according to accepted math and theory.....then there are no bad beats.

If you think there is such a thing as a 'bad beat' then maybe poker isn't for you.

Works for me perfectly. had couple bad beats quickly behind each other and i got soooooo mad and angry with the game, went out for a run and did some other exercise routines, calmed me right down. Besides that i all did some other things to help brighten up my mood, watch some movies, tv series etc. it works, levels you right out

I lose with the best hand and I win with the best hand. I lose with junk and I win with junk. Sometimes it seems like you can't catch an break and its loss after loss. My whole January/ February has been this route. I think there has to be a fluke in the system cause my play is spotless. I step back and cuss and say no more. I carry on with daily living and then back at it again and shrug off the "beats"

I was playing two days ago in a cash game using 8 tables. On one table I had JJ , raised, on a dry board the villain was all in, turned a set and JJ loses to 10s. The next deal on a second table, JJ, same result. 10s flop a set. Third deal, AK runs into AA with a AKx flop. Fourth deal, 10s, flop a set and lose to a Q high straight. lost 4 buyins in about 45 seconds. I could have continued and may have recouped some of my money, but could have continued to lose also and was pretty bent. I simply quit for the day and broke even the next day.

Some days it's better to quit and not chase losses, starting fresh the next day. Even after a break, it can be hard to get back into your normal game.

It really depends on your mindset, if it does not effect your emotional state in anyway ofcourse continue. However if you're starting to get tilted it might be best to take a break for a while.

This is how I look at it:

If it is a genuine bad beat it means that you played it well and that is the most important. So no need to worry about it ;)

if you feel tilted - run from the table
if you don't - kepp grinding EV+ =)
if your question is about $ than keep smart BR and you'll be good

your decision should be made on certain situation rather than on a rule

Hello Brazilian friend.

I'm going through a similar doubt.

I even mentally conspire against the program :) challenging the odds, because I was always forced to play all ins early and even paying to win (80/20 or 70/30) I lose everyone.

I stop playing a bit, I'm going to pedal, swim or play some sound .... that if I do not have any work to do.
