Hi
I have played poker for a few years now. Nothing to serious, win a bit lose a bit.
No real bank roll, just use my wages to play. If I win, I draw it out, if I lose then so be it, I play again another day.
This has been okay, but now I want to get a little more serious.
I play PLO and NLH at low stakes from 0.05 / 0.10 to 0.5 / 1.00 dependant on spare cash. My wife has just had a baby so funds will get a little tighter.
I tend to be better at NLH, the swings on PLO drive me crazy.
What I want to know is I would like to start near the bottom 0.05 / 0.10 what would I need to start off with bankroll wise, how many hands should I play a week to move up levels and what sort of profit do I need to make to move up levels?
I am also kind of ignorant to Rake back, could anyone explain it to me in laymens terms?
Look forward to constructive comments
Cheers

First off, I suggest you start treating you BR as separate from your other money. To play 10NL, I'd want a minimum of 30 buyins, so $300. If you can't set that much aside, then start lower. You should be prepared to drop down anyway if your BR drops below a minimum amount; I usually suggest 20 buyins.

Rakeback is getting a portion of the rake you pay returned. So for example, if you get 25% rakeback per month, you get back 1/4 of the total rake you paid during the month as a lump sum.

If you play on Stars like your info says then there is no rake back, the VIP system they have is basically your rake back (you earn FPPs which you can exchange for cash). Rakeback is possible on some sites, you have to sign up through an affiliate, google 'rakeback'.

Sure family should be the main focus but that doesn't mean you have to completely forget about poker. Babies sleep a LOT and there is still time to play some poker now and again :)

Family of course is my main focus, but like you say they sleep a lot and I do get some spare time with my job.
I want to keep my brain sharp and really have a goal and hey who knows may get some extra cash on the side to buy the baby things lol..
Appreciate the advice.
I know this is a how long is a piece of string type of a question. But how many tables do you think is sensible? I was thinking 2 or 3 and what should I look to be hitting on an hourly rate to make the jumps up levels? I know its a time thing and I have plenty of that.
Thanks again guys

U got the time , but u also need the BR to play with. Do u beat the limit u play now , than u can think about playing more tables at a time. Moving up in level depends on the BR.
gl on and off the felts

I don't have much trouble beating the Microstakes. I do something struggle with boredom when play really low. I am now working on my mindset to combat this problem.
Like the other guy said I have to seperate my wages from B/R hence me looking to take it more seriously now.
I am comfortable with 2 - 3 tables
cheers

When people say they're bored, it often means they pay little or no attention when they're not in hands. While it's certainly more fun to play hands than to watch the ones we fold, that's not the best way to get better at the game. Tracking software helps by collecting info, but doesn't do everything; e.g. it won't capture things like timing tells.

Something I found hard to find was advice on how much to withdraw and when. BRM and keeping a separate BR will be important for you, but ultimately, we all want to have that extra cash in our pockets. I finally decided I was going to withdraw 10% of all my wins. I play mainly MTTs and SNGs, so that's easy to calculate, and I just keep track on an excel spreadsheet. Basically I'm forcing myself to have at least a 10% ROI to move up in stakes. You may want to decide to come up with your own "withdrawal" strategy too so that you can have a clear distinction between what is "ok" to play poker with, and what should be used for the family. And congrats on the baby!

lol, thats what I mean when I say need to improve my mindset. I am going to stop looking on the internet / watching tv.
I do have an excel spreadsheet that I complete, but it doesnt have anything in regards to withdrawal and what I should allow. I will add this - thanks for the idea. Thanks Also, best thing ever.
Nice one all, your comments are very helpful
