Hi, I've been interested in poker for a while now but have only ever played it for fun, playing some tournaments etc. However as I'm a skint student I'm looking to try and make a bit of money as well. I know a bit of basic poker strategy but where wondering where I can learn more? This forum I guess?

I've been looking to play at microlimits and was wondering what the earnings potential would be if say I played 2 hours per day?
Thanks for any help.
:)

It depends. Let's say winning somewhere in the range of 5 big blinds per 100 hands is a fairly reasonable target. At NL2, and assuming 50 hands per hour, that's 5 cents per hour. But if you can hold this win rate while playing 4 tables at once, you're up to 20 cents per hour.

Not much, obviously, but some players have higher win rates per 100, and can play a lot more tables. For instance, 32 tables at 10bb per hundred is a lot more per hour. And that's without factoring in moving up above 2NL.

2 hours a day at micro limits might make you a little bit of money if you are a good player, but it's hard to imagine it turning into a steady, reliable source of extra cash for you.

A more likely strategy is for you to hone your skills at the microlevels, then move up a level where you can conceivably make some decent walking around money.

True, do you think there is much of skill difference between the different levels within microlimits? I suppose as well most tables are playing far above 50 hands per hour.

Yeh, I'd quite like to do that. Any ideas on how long someone should practise before moving up a level?

Sure you could find it from these forums. There are plenty of forums on the internet to learn poker from. Books are also a great tool to learn poker with. Believe it or not there are a lot of websites that have good basic strategy all the way up to advanced strategy. My preferred choice at the moment is books. Find another person with a similar interest and you can also learn from them that way too whether it be an online friend or a person off the table. Forums are great for hand analysis.

As for how much money you can make at the micro limits it isn't going to be very much. But I think you can learn a lot from the micro limits and do it for cheap. Maybe advanced strategy won't be employed as much at the micro limits but by playing them until you've built your bankroll large enough to move up in stakes you'll probably have the basics mastered. Good luck!

Again, it depends. For example, some players move from 2nl to 5nl with no difficulty at all. Others get crushed and have to drop back down to rebuild enough roll to try again multiple times before they start winning at nl5. Some never win at this level.

My point is that there is an overall skill difference in moving up, but the degree to which it affects a single player can vary very widely.

And 50 hands per hour is a ballpark for full ring. I believe beginners should become winning players at FR before trying 6max. Or zoom
