Hi all,

I'l start out by giving a bit of background. I started playing poker in 2008 when I was at university, I played with friends online and sometimes in the casino. I even played in a couple of decent sized live tournaments, no big cashes but I did ok. After graduating I travelled for a year and because of this I stopped playing. Fast forward to now. I recently started playing online off the back of stumbling upon a poker video on youtube, it gave me the bug again. I own 6 different poker books and am reading a lot of the articles on card player poker school. I really want to up level my game. This is where my problem is.

I have been playing the micro stakes on 888, mostly the $1 9 handed regular sng. I win or cash almost every time. I have seen a lot of things written about bankroll management that say that you shouldn't play above your bankroll. In this first week I have made an extra $20 on my $20 deposit. Including my bonus this puts me at around $50. To me that isn't enough money to move up to the $5 game. The problem is that I'm trying to implement the strategies that I am learning about betting and putting opponents on hands etc but the games are such crapshoots that it's almost impossible. I mostly just play ABC poker and win or I try stuff like betting people off hands, pre flop raising or semi/bluffing and it doesn't work because everything gets called all of the time. You can't isolate 1 player, you raise pre flop by around 6 times the bb and get 4 callers with completely random hands. I feel like it is holding back my ability to learn.

At the moment I don't really care too much about the money, I care about up levelling my game. I could quite happily deposit $100 (bringing me to ($150) and start playing in the $5 games where I imagine the poker is a bit tougher and less random.

Is this an acceptable thing to do? Or am I falling into some trap?

I know new players shouldn't try to move up too quickly but I'm not really new and I am beating the micros consistently. I can't tell if my frustration is justified or if I'm just being impatient.

1st of all, study up on bankroll management.

The rule of thumb is that you should have 100 buy in's for whatever stake you're playing. This way you aren't affected by the normal downswings that poker throws your way. Variance is cray cray.

You want to move up to 5$ games? You need a $500 bankroll.

Also, You said you were trying to implement strategies that aren't working at the lower stakes. This is a red flag to me. You are attempting to play too many levels ahead of your opponents skill level, effectively just hurting yourself. So look up the term leveling. You only want to play 1 level higher than your opponents. Not knowing this probably means you shouldn't attempt to move higher just yet.

You'll get there though. Keep practicing and asking questions.

I'd definitely slow your roll there. What's the hurry? If you really are crushing the micro games then you should be able to move up naturally without depositing. However just because you've read a book or two doesn't make you really ready to handle the situations and swings that will be coming. You will end up paying for your lessons one way or another. So you can either learn them on the smaller stakes or at the larger ones. If you don't mind blowing $150 for lessons then great. But you could probably get those same lessons for $50. Catch my meaning? Good luck and keep learning!

Edit: in regards to brm I think 50 buy-ins are fine for a recreational player which would be $250 for the $5 level.

Ok, thanks for the advice. I'l stick with the Mircros for now. I've read a bit about brm, I even copied a stakes to bankroll chart down but it didn't suggest being as extreme as only playing games worth 1% of your br, although I definitely see the logic. I'm playing over that now in the 1 dollar game. I'm used to swings in variance though, I play magic the gathering.

On a different subject, where is the best place to post hands for analysis?

My opinion is if you can - you have to play.
This is not a job - it's just a game
If I had $ 500, I would have played without looking at books on poker

1% may seem extreme but it also GREATLY reduces your risk of ruin. Pros usually follow this as a general rule. Since you're not a pro and stated you could reload, I figured a lowered brm plan would be fine and still be extremely conservative. Really you should just play for awhile and see what happens when you lose a few in a row you should have won. Do you keep playing knowing you're playing well? Take a break? Raise the stakes because you're due because who could really be that unlucky? Brm is nice to talk about but can be difficult to stick to.

Since you're playing tournament poker, in the forum click TOURNAMENT POKER. You can find a link there for hand analysis. Good luck!

If your beating the micros, dont change things.

Stay there for long until you have accumulated decent amount and you can change stake at that point.

With regards to BRM, many systems you can try and would depend much on your cash back.
