i like playing horse and while playing this i have noticed that stud is my weakest game,i seem to fold more then most and get involved in less hands then most.if i have 3 suited cards i play,a pair i play, connectors i play,2 high cards i play but pretty much anything else i fold.is this sensible play or being overcautious?and is there any advice anyone can give or links to articles that could help improve my game as i know that improving this one game should improve my play overll in horse.

It is best to play less hands in stud. You want to play the sort of hand syou are playing. You have to play tight so that you can win at this game. Playing loose and you will lose a lot. I play tighter than hands you play. I dont play 3 suited cards UNLESS had ace. I dont play any small pair as if dont hit trips next card id be folding, also if do hit trips liklihood is someone will have better trips or str8 or flush. I do play small pairs but fold if dont hit 4th street. Also keep an eye wats out there. If 2 of same suit was out there and u have 3 of them fold. if none are out then call. Also with str8 drawing cards are there any your outs out there already if holding 789 and u see 2 10s and a 6 then id fold. keep an eye on your outs and i wouldnt play 2 high cards neither. 2 high cards are poor in stud. If you play tight you should win more pots than lose at showdown.

I'm not a great stud player but I have had some success at HORSE tournaments and Eamesy's advice is good.

Dump small pairs on fourth street if you don't make trips. Too often you will call down with a bad pair or pair + SD and end up with a bad 2 pair and pay off the river.

If you're in a hand and someone is capping on third and betting every street, if you cannot beat the hand they are representing or don't have outs to beat their likely holdings, shut it down early.

You should play tight on early streets and tend to call due to pot odds on the river.

Also, this is obvious, but you must pay attention to the up cards when deciding to play your hand. If you have (AsJs)4s and the up cards you see include 3 spades, 1 ace and 1 jack, you should probably dump it.

Most important part of stud would be scanning the table and remembering cards that were folded by other players, in order to recognize how many of your outs are live.
Lets say I pick up 8-9-10 dimes, I scan the board and there is not 1 dime, 7 or jack showing, this hand is very strong because everyone of your 4th street improvement cards are live. Lets say I improve on 4th street by picking up the jack of clubs, minor improvement, but improvement towards making a big hand. Scan the board, 4 other players in, who improved, who picked up one of my out cards, and now, did either of the other 3 players who folded, fold a queen. And, am I holding out cards for the other players.
Drawing hands are very tricky to play, but fun to win big pots with !
On the other hand, be careful not to overplay large hidden pairs, like aces or kings, hidden is the key word, your opponents don't know you have aces, you can get caught up in big pots while your opponent catches a second pair and you never do, while pounding away on every street. I like to complete with this hand, then get alittle passive with it, and let the split queens bet into me, acting like I completed with split 10's and now i'm scared. In the meantime, by 5th street, I have a queen now, and my 3rd, 4th and 5th street cards are live(remember, I know every live card thats been folded, because I've made a mental picture of every hand since the start of the hand), and he isn't showing anything drawing. My odds are very high to win this hand, and now I can safely raise him, at a point where he just put out the big bet and committed himself.
What on God's earth am I talking about !

If ur learning how to play stud online Id say make sure u understand the rules 1st. if ur playing stud live ull learn how to play quick because the dealer will tell u whats going on quick.

But online everything is done automatically. Ive seen ppl go for a long time without knowing who brings in if they have the same card but different suit because they just click away instead of understanding the rules.

Just like any form of stud, u have to have a plan for ur starting cards and see if some1 else has the cards that ull need to complete ur hand.

Next id tell u to go buy or ninja a book on stud strategy. $10-20$ or less lolol will save u a lot of time learning the game.

If ur just starting out try “Winning 7-Card Stud: Transforming Home Poker Chumps into Casino Killers” by Ashley Adams. It has basic strategy, is actually fun to read because its written well and isn’t written like a silly tech manual like the 2+2 stuff.
