Hey guys,

So I decided to learn how to play poker about a week ago, holdem as the primary, although i enjoy PLO aswell, and im having trouble deciding whether or not to invest $100 in a site to try out the micro stakes.

I'm about 1/2 way through Phil gordon's little green book, I understand the game quiet a bit(atleast considering i didn't know what a straight flush was 2 weeks ago). I understand EV, implied odds, position, ect. I find reading other players most difficult, although that's probably a combination with my lack of experience and playing donks in freerolls. Obviously i still have tons to learn.

But my question is, will the micro stakes offer me a an opportunity to use techniques which i can't practice against the players in playmoney/freerolls?

I've played a few thousand hands, and things such as 3-4 betting are extremely rare.

I wan't to expand my understanding of the game and refine techniques, but i don't want to go broke in the process.

The best place to practice is SNG tournements. Ive found with micro stakes (assuming your refering to .02/.05) people play with anything. So donks and idiots can ruin a day when they bet with rags. $10 SNG (sometimes $5) you will be able to use these techniques and cash pretty easily. If you havent decided on a site Id suggest Bovada.lv , you get a 100% match bonus and a few freerolls for new signup. If you want to help out a fellow member use my referal code P14A07D0 when you sign up and we will both get an extra bonus.

Thanks for the advice.

I've read on these boards that alot of people would use pokerstars if it was available to them. I'm in canada, should i go with them?

I'd much rather play abc tight poker than have players react with an all in after i raise. It'd be fine if it were one player, but the entire table goes nuts.

As a beginner playing micros, your first priority should be to learn to play ABC poker well enough to be +EV. In terms of using plays, you can ignore most of them until your base game is sound enough to build on.

Yes - go ahead and plant $100 on Pokerstars and count that as your on the job training fund. Don't worry so much about your graph/profits for now - you are working on and developing your game - it's your tuition.

Still lot's to learn, but make note of where you are today and come December (3 months later) take the time to reflect and see how far you've come. You will be amazed :) Good flops to you!

Oh and if and when you are are done reading the Green Book - read it again and then acquire something by Dan Harrington (you'll have to decide whether tournament or cash) and prepare to raise your poker thinking process. Gordon is excellent at laying the foundation but get the framework in place you will need to move on to Harrington (and even move on from him when the time comes).

I almost won the freeroll i was in 6th/3000 and got into the money. I received a ticket for a satellite which i also just barely missed the money in =[.

I'll try a few more freerolls, then ill make a deposit. Thanks for helping out.
