So here's the thing.... I play online poker for fun, not profit. I win little prizes here and there and that's fine by me. I'll never be a pro...

But, it's very unsettling to be attacked by a stranger without being provoked. (Well, I guess they think I provoked them by winning the hand they believed belonged to them......) Unfortunately, I tend to attack back, even though I know this is stupid and childish.

What's the best way to handle abusive players during an online game?

if hes trying to provoke you in chat ignore him. his mistakes are your profit and hes trying to get you to make bad plays, just ignore him. if he becomes racist you can always contact support about his chat abuse.

I know at Full tilt, whenever a players spams chat, their chat becomes disabled for a bit

there really is no right way to handle it other then ignore it

if u are only in it for fun then u must be playing freerolls and freerolls are basically the learning blocks and the problem with those is u have alot of new or so called "bad" players who are either super competitive or think that aces should never lose

truthfully no matter what stakes u play at there are going to be players belittling other players for there play u just have to take it with a grain of salt they probably want u to fire back because then u are worrying about what they say then paying attention to the table and the players around u and get u off your game :D

Most of the time just ignore it. If it continues then you can disable his chat and not even see what he says. But depending on your mood, if you are in a happy mood and feel like having some fun, maybe come back with some funny remarks to throw him off his game, BUT be careful it doesn't go to extremes.
99% of the time I will ignore his chat.

u should not pay any attention to him because all he wants is to damage your game and u should not give him that satisfaction ....if he crosses the line u should report him and his chat will be disabled for a short while (at least he won bother anyone else :D)and u will go on with your game:smile:

I've had similar problems. I knocked someone out of a freeroll by calling them with the best hand postflop and this player stayed in the chat for an extra 30 minutes to harass me. Unfortunately I couldn't block them because they were no longer "at the table" and so I just had to ignore them. I fired back a little bit but eventually just ignored them. The only thing you can really do is email the admin of the site an give them the tournament # and the username and let them handle it.

If you want you can reply back.
But remember most times this is what they are looking for.
They want to effect your play in some way.

If you reply back I would suggest:

If you get the nutzzz.

Provoke them in the proper way.
No Trash talk.
But challenge them.
Showing your intelligence not getting into a trash to trash chat.

But choose your words so you don't step out of bounce.

Or
Just ignore the chat or turn it off.

Either way make Hold em an enjoyable experience.
Don't let ever get to you.

Bleh.

People do this kind of stuff because they have no life. They usually have nothing better to do and/or need to vent and need to find a good reason to. Or they're trying to stand up for a friend. Whatever.

The thing is no matter how well you play or how bad you play, you're always going to have someone hating on your game. I honestly don't care what people say as long as they don't take it too far. They can call me a donk or fish all they want. They can berate my game and tell me how much I suck and how bad I play all they want because it doesn't bother me. As long as they don't bring my family, religion, race, or anything non-poker related but offending into it, I'm fine. But if they do, I report them very fast.

All in all...if they're trash talking, let them. It's better for you because now you're in their head, you have them tilted. Don't let them do the same to you. I let my play to do my talking for me.

:D:D +1 I do it all the time when i am after fun, with play money, and then i start doing small pokes, and or beat them bad..... Use the chat to help your game, and don't let it get to you.... Heres a though i still have my chat on UB even after i reported someone, for going over board:eek: and that after i told him to knock it off :smile: and some of my come backs were real good :D:D;)

All in all...if they're trash talking, let them. It's better for you because now you're in their head, you have them tilted. Don't let them do the same to you. I let my play to do my talking for me.

Always best to just let it go. If it continues, spend the time reporting it, not challenging it.

I've seen cases where ALL participants in offensive chat may get their privileges suspended. Even if one persoson was only 'slightly' involved, the sites feel that the actions of the 3 are disrupting the play of the remaining 6 or more.

You'll never get your chat suspended for reporting offenses - but THEY sure will for committing them. That's where 'the real last word' sees the light of day.

Sure you can. At Full Tilt, there is an options box in the upper right corner of your table. Click it and then uncheck the 'observer chat'. At poker stars, click on the dealer chips in the upper middle, and do the same thing.

To the OP, I tend to attack back, but never in anger. I often see it as a chance for a little more fun. Once I make the table laugh, they'll usually chime in right along with me. Of course, it helps not to play too badly, like calling bets to chase a straight when that's all you got. I don't report unless it is truly over the top. I figure they are suffering enough wallowing in their own bile. :p

Unfortunately on bodog once someone is knocked out they are no longer part of the table. I emailed them about it but don't think it's been fixed. Since they're technically not "at the table" you can't block them if they're just observing the table.

For me, I'll only abuse players that are regs, and only if I think I can get them to tilt. And even then, its pretty rare that I'll needle people at the table.

Most of the time, when you're getting abuse from someone, they just need to vent. Just ignore them & let them get it out of their system.

Chat back at them, don't be insulting try and engage them in conversation I find it works well if you talk back to the as if they were a normal person (they aren't often) they end up not knowing what to do. I have to say I do try and say the odd strange thing but I try not to be insulting unless they push me too far.

They are doing it to try and tilt you, talking back often tilts them and I have no problem with that. :)

put him on tilt

Putting an opponent on tilt is a useful weapon in no-limit holdem. If a player wants to trash talk because of a beat I put on him, then I know he is probably susceptible to tilting very easily too. I usually like to respond with an "lol" or "heehee". He will be ten times as angry once I laugh at his surly comments. Now I'm shooting fish in a barrel, because 99% of the time he's going to make a donkey play at me out of anger and get his money in bad just because he's steaming. The trick is making sure you have a good hand to go to war with. If you do that you'll stack Mr. Angry 99% of the time within 15-20 hands of the offending play.

Use his anger to your advantage. It's easier than you think.

It can be very offputing when this happens. Try not to get involved but if you feel that somebody is getting to you switch off their chat.

The other day a woman knocked a player out early in a nine man sng with an awfull play. For the next 20 or so minutes he berated her and wouldnt stop. I said forget it man go fire up another table but still he carried on so I said ok if you carry on Im going to call a moderator and then he said nothing.

All you can do is call a moderator if they keep talking trash they shall be chat banned.

I got a tsk, tsk, tsk, last night (and a few other choice words) but I have been playing poker for long enough that it doesn't bug me in the slightest.

Sometimes I'll make a good catch, but that happens to everyone. If someone wants to tell me what a crappy player I am, I just don't pay attention. I'm doing my best and unless someone has constructive criticism on how I play, i am not really interested in what some anonymous player thinks of me.

If you watch on how you come back at them it will help, i should also tell you that theres a fine line, and UB tends to suspended chat for the one who started it ;).
I thought my chat would be suspended, from poking back at the one who called gay, and i still have my chat. thought i did not used any cruse words:)
Thanks everyone.........a lot of good advice.
Your welcome, just report it, and don't let it get to you.

Let him rant and rave. If I get one of these guys I tend to poke a stick in the hive and get him really going. If he's on tilt it's easier to trap him if you happen to get a monster hand. I want guys on tilt-they're easier to drain chips off them that way. Remember the way you played that hand-he will think you're trying to donk out on him again and then go for the jugular. Poker is mental too, don't forget that you have to get into their heads.
