You often hear the saying 'if the hand is good enough to play its good enough to raise'

But at the same time you also hear about keeping your 3bet range around 3 to 5%
...And also that your PFR should only be a few percent behind your VPiP.

As I understood it, the purpose of a 3bet is to ideally start the foundations of a big pot and ideally get heads up.

So what im getting confused with is the style of raising preflop.. If you just double the opening raise is that considered bad?

It seems contradictory to say you should be raising almost all hands you play preflop but at the same time keeping your 3bet to 3/5%

Don't open limp OOP and it's probably better to 3bet 3x(+) rather than 2x because it'll get more folds and discourage calls in multiple spots.

I disagree with a lot of these sayings. The first one about being good enough to play then good enough to raise is nonsense to me. There are many times you will have mid pocket pairs like 55-88 and they are good to call with a set mine but you wouldnt want to 3 bet with them (especially in pots that are pre ante in tournaments as an example). There are multiple other types of hands where overcalling is okay so you would not want to raise or be 3 betting every hand. Limit poker you can make that argument I think to always come in for a raise but that is a whole different conversation in my opinion.

The 3 bet being between 3-5% is also off. This should depend on the game you are in and how often your opponents fold to 3 bets. 3 betting between 3-5% is fine (its actually my 3 bet %) but there is nothing wrong either depending on the game of having your 3 bet % be in the neighborhood of 7%. This would mean you have some 3 bet bluffs in your range which again, depending on opponents, is a good thing. Don't think you have to stay in the range of 3-5% as it will box in your game. If that's where you fall naturally then that is fine but don't strive for that to be your stats.

Third saying is fine but 3 betting can be an effective bluff against the correct opponents or can lead you to an early exit as well. Depends on the game but again dont get boxed in to thinking it is only for when I want to play a big hand as even though most of the time that is true 3 bet bluffing (such as when in the SB against a late position raise) can be a very effective tool to use.

Pre flop raising sizes is a personal preference in my book but it should also be somewhat a factor of the game you are in as well. A game that has a lot of 3 betting you want to open smaller and games where there are tons of fish then you can open larger with big hands as they will call down more often. There always seems to be a debate between 2x and 3 raising pre. To me most players who are calling 2x will also call 3x and if they are folding to 3x they will probably fold to 2x. Only exception that I normally see would be the Big blind since they already have a BB in the middle. Think of it though as do we want them calling when we have a raising strength hand and they have any two? I say yes so personally I like smaller pre flop sizings in the neighborhood of 2-2.5x for tournaments. Cash I think should be 3-3.5x for micros (players tend to call more so you can get more value going bigger) and as you get higher stakes should be more in the 2.5x range.

The whole idea of raising preflop is to only play against 1 or 2 opponents. The closer you get to the button, the wider your opening range should be. However, if you are first in on CO with a hand like J9s and the button or SB raises you then I would almost always fold there.

Preflop Raising

As I see in most tournaments 2x or 2.5x is the standard raise. In a cash games especially in low stakes I think 2x raise is just too shallow a lot of fishy players will make a call even with mediocre hand (as I observed mostly). 3-betting with a premium hand against a LAG player is a profitable one. 3-betting on a NIT is also profitable so always want to consider what do you want to accomplish by 3-betting.

It is hard to talk about sizebet without talk about ranges, sizepot... All this things are correlated and we need to think in them together to take a good decision.

A 3-bet percent of 3% would generally be very low. You should be raising most hands you play when you're first-in the pot (with the exception of small blind). When someone else raises before you, a good strategy is to 3-bet just for value against calling stations and have a balanced 3-bet range against good opponents.

A balanced 3-bet range will depend on positions but often be something like: TT+, AQs, AK, and some hands weaker but nicely playable hands like 73s to get the balance.

Anyway a quicker answer to your question would just be to let your 3-bet percent be higher than 3-5% :)

I make sure to 3 bet with a good card. Not 2 bet, but 3 bet. This will force opponents to fold weak cards, but which could defeat me

The most important thing you should pay attention to when betting is not to give your opponent a good chance to draw a hand, any mistake of the opponent is chips in your stack.:)
