Omaha Hold'em (usually shortened to just 'Omaha') is very similar to Texas Hold'em (universally known as just 'Hold'em'). Like Texas Hold'em, Omaha has five community cards, with the same flop/turn/river structure. The two key differences between Omaha and Hold'em are:

  • Each player receives four hole cards instead of two.
  • A final Omaha hand is comprised of two cards from the four hole cards and three cards from the board. You must use two and only two of your hole cards in completing your five-card hand.
The fact that everyone receives four cards rather than two means that generally there is more 'action' in Omaha. More players will stay to see the flop, and three (or even more) players will sometimes be involved in the showdown. Overall, Omaha is a much more complicated game than Hold'em.

I like to play my Omaha hands just like my holdem hands. AAKK with two suits is the best hand. You want to generally play higher cards, suited aces (so you can make the nuts). Or hands you can make straight draws with. Sometimes you can have a crazy amount of outs. Like any broadway card can give you the nut straight. I think they call that a wrap. You wouldn't want to play a hand of all the same suit because you'd be blocking your own outs to a flush. There's a lot more to it but those are some basic guidlines. Have funskie!!

There is no best hand pre-flop in Omaha as the pre-flop betting is cheap compared to combinations of 4 of your cards,6 hands, with 3 board cards.

AAxx is over rated. Just like in HE If you make large pre flop reraises opponents will key on to you and try to outdraw with any 4 cards

I do not agree that Omaha is very like Texas Holdem, to me there are completely different games.
The variance in Omaha is far greater than in Holdem and you need a lot bigger bank than in Holdem.
In Holdem after the flop you have a good idea if you are leading or not but in Omaha until the river has been dealt, apart from very rare occasions, before the river you really have no idea how good your hand is.
Although certain hands like AAKK double suited look great, with a flop of three running cards, 5 6 7, or any low or medium pair, with AAKK you wont have the slightest idea where you are.
Omaha is a lot more complicated than Texas, to me anyway, but it is a more interesting game but do not play Omaha if you hate bad beats cos you will get a lot of them :)

I would agree the Omaha and Hold-em are very different games. I am certainly no expert in Omaha but I have found that preflop hand selection in Omaha is much more important than Holdem. Omaha allows you to have more combinations to play for (as do your opponents, and you can easily find yourself in trouble and the possibility of drawing dead is more likely.

To anyone who wants to try Omaha, learn about preflop hand selection first.

I'm more of a sucker for Omaha 8 or bettor. I won't play a cash game for it online anymore. All too often you only get heads up action, it gets raised up all the way then you split the pot and lose money on the rake.
