Where do you live? In Europe online casinos are regulated, and of course your money is (reasonably) safe on these regulated sites. But its common sense to not deposit all your retirement funds on a poker site, just as you would not deposit it in a village bank with no depositors ensurance. poker sites like banks can go broke, but luckily it does not happen all that often.

If you live in the US outside the states, where online casinos are legal, then the situation is quite different. There are sites, that still accept US customers, but in principle there is always a risk, that US authorities might suddenly decide to go after these sites, as they did with Full Tilt, pokerstars and Absolute Poker back in 2011. So in that situation your funds are fairly unsafe, and maybe its best to just accept the laws of the place, where you live, even you dont agree with them.

I would find a site that has a deposit bonus
and start a bankroll and try low stakes first and slowly grind your way up
And also still play the freerolls that can add to a nice bankroll

if you already have a bankroll of lets say 50$ on stars
i would play between 0.50/1.00$ tournaments/sit&go's and use that to grind your bankroll up slowly

Or just keep playing untill your bankroll is 100$+ from freerolls
and try to play them on othersites aswell if you do not already do so,
Like 888poker, ACR, Etc.

Gl at the tables :)

remember that playing online poker is a computer program and this program has some shortcomings, it seems to promote certain players but it is not true from experience I know that you can win even with the biggest stars

I think that for beginners, freerolls are the best option. Playing freerolls gives you the opportunity to gain experience and increase your bankroll.

First, accumulate your bankroll by playing freerolls. And then try playing at cash tables and small entry tournaments. This will give you the opportunity to test yourself in a game for real money. Then decide what to do next.
