This might be a stupid question, but here goes. Since UIGEA is aimed at American banks not American poker players, could an American simply open a bank account in, for example, canada?

I'm not suggesting that you try to hide the transactions from the IRS or anything like that but if the whole issue is US banks processing the transactions could I simply use a non-American bank. From where I live visiting Canada isn't that big of a deal. Would it be legal?

I think the sites will block you based on your IP.

Phil Gordon talked about living close to the Washington/Idaho border, but having to go to his office in Idaho to play online.

I'm not blocked now. I'm in Alaska, not Washington. I was just thinking that a bank account across the border might make deposits and withdrawals a lot easier.

LOL at Kenzie. :)

Not true; we bury the money in September, before the snow. Then when the snow melts in June we go out and look for it.

Okay, I thought you were thinking about trying to play at partypoker or some other site that doesn't allow US players.

I don't know how setting up a bank account in another country would make deposits and withdrawals easier.

copied from wiki answers

as far as i know, you can as long as you have valid status in the country... such as a visitor's or student's visa, or you are a permanent resident. if not, you can always go to wells fargo in the states and set up an international checking account for canada.

Well, my thinking was, UIGEA is aimed at US banks not US players. If a US player is using a foreign bank wouldn't that bypass the UIGEA?

I certainly am no legal scholar :) and there is probably a big hole in my theory but if I am correct that would take care of the waiting weeks/months for withdrawals and deposits to clear that we are constantly reading about.

I was actually thinking of moving my bankroll to Full Tilt for the rakeback but all of the stories of withdrawals and deposits taking forever have me a bit spooked.
