hero has 24,012 in chips
villain has 44,762 in chips
blinds 600/1200 with a 240 ante

hero raises AK of diamonds to 4BB from MP
Villian calls in cut off, everyone else folds

Flop comes 10 of spades, 8 of clubs, K of clubs.
Hero jams about 19,000

Was this the right play? I am wondering if I should instead just open raise as to not put my tournament life at risk.

I think its better to bet like 3k on flop and shove any turn, this way you might get called by alot more hands than just by shoving overbeting the flop.

I think I would have done the same here. But gohaku's suggestion is a good option as well.

If I do raise and then get called should I check back a club on the turn.

Why 4bb preflop?
I would open standard 2bb, than 70% c-bet :)

Actually there isn't enough info to give an answer. For example you didn't say how many people left, what stack sizes at your table, what's the prizes, what phase the tournament was (although the presense of antes says it wasn't the early phase): if it was a bubble then how important for you to get ITM; were you interested in winning the tournament or just get some money from it...

Overall raising all-in preflop wouldn't be a mistake: if it was a full-ring then initial pot size would be about 4200 chips and you had only 5 times as much. Thus if villain 3-bet you'd have to go all-in anyway; and given 3-bet size would be around 12bb the villain wouldn't have folded. Also AK doesn't always connect with the flop; thus raising all-in eliminates weaker hands from villains' ranges which could connect and beat you in case of calling.

As for your jam on the flop it was totally fine: your stack size is too small to make usual postflop game and top pair/top kicker is too good to fold in any case.

I don't like the 4x preflop or the jam on the flop but to each their own.

Depending on history with the CO the shove could be fine but not the standard play. I would bet flop for value and to set up turn jam.

Good luck!

I agree with Gohaku , overbeting flop is not so good play , specially with AK and 1 paid on board .

Also 4x raise preflop ... 2,2-3 max , depending on others on table ... as you said , you don't want to put your life on a line with 2 high cards, would prefer pp ;)

This is a freeroll, so raising 4bb is not bad, because people call you with worse hands anyway. On the flop though you should have bet 50%-70% and shoved turn and extract maximum value from tens and straight draws.

AK suited, flop top pair top kicker with about 16 BB behind, I do not think that you will ever be folding her, so go for value. All in on the flop will scare away weaker hands that can call you. Small lead bet, or even a check/call lead turn would be better

Bet smaller pre and bet 3/4 on the flop then evaluate.
