This hand crippled me & it pissed me off too :D It's a great play! I guess... :D
So my questions are:
1. Is folding here profitable?
2. Is this a call for freerolls? (Also insight on how freeroll players play (loose/tight) would be nice!)
So this is the hand analysis from Poker Co-pilot (FLOP 2 pair, then bluffed off hand) : No Limit Hold'em Tournament T20/T40

I'm a little confused... with all of the chips you have already invested by the turn... why fold on the river to a 3s? Also w/o any regard to playing a 89s at utg+1 (which in starting hand ranges for that position is unadvisable), I probably would have done a even more significant raise pre-flop followed by about a pot-sized+ raise on flop... I doubt either one would have folded given their hands and situation (especially in a freeroll) but I think it would have been more appropriate...

In an on demand freeroll I would be willing to risk it all with two pair. In a higher quality freeroll you may want to play a bit tigher.

Yeah I agree with Ezekial, the 3s on the river is the least scary card you could have got since it did nothing for the v range at this point. Essentially the question question you're asking here vs the raise on the river is whether your hand beat whatever the v had on the turn, so lets look at that. Skipping the 98s preflop open (next time try 3-4BB), on the flop you hit two pair but on a not to great board and v checks to you and I think the best action is to really make him pay for his drawing hands or get the most value vs his pairs (99, 88, QT are probably not in his range here because we'd assume he'd lead out with those if he's an average player) so go at least pot size, maybe around T900 (no idea what T is lol) and see what he does.

On the turn I think it's a bit more complicated since a lot more hands could have hit with that king. Still the check generally shows not a lot of strength and you can play it one of two ways. The first is that you check behind with the intention of calling a non scare river card if v bets the river or betting any card if the v checks again. The second option is firing a second barrel and hope v folds or calls with worse hands (either draws or top pairs). Personally I think the check check play is the best here because you know you have a good hand but on this board it doesn't exactly play well with large bets so by checking behind you actually can keep the size of the river bet smaller and get a more reasonable bet to call if the v bets or you can get called by a lot larger range of hands if a non scare card comes on the board because it won't have helped v's range but you also showed weakness on the earlier street.

Finally we come to the river and I think you basically call any bet in any scenerio with the 3. V showed no real strength on any previous hand and that card really does nothing for his range and with how you played it you risked so many chips that if you fold to a 3 on that board you shouldn't have risked any chips on the earlier street (check-fold), so I'm calling any bet basically on that street with two pair (especially in a freeroll because generally the play is loose and pretty straightforward i.e. flushes and straights bet when they hit).

Playing like that is risky d + with that 89s. Freerol tournaments is playing almost without bluffs and in position.

From what I understand these freerolls don't pay many places despite the large fields and the payouts aren't great (but it's free!)

This would indicate to me you should be playing to make big stacks and deep runs or to bust quickly and try again.

So playing suited connectors (and big pairs) and hammering your opponents when you connect sounds pretty good to me (instead of playing patient small-ball poker). Big bets and raises with big hands - people aren't in these to fold.

Based on this I would bet more on this very connected flop and pot or even jam that turn card.

Good luck to you!
