So today, I was playing the pokerstars TV Freeroll, with approximately 20,000 participants. My mindset going into this tournament with such a large group of players was to be aggressive and try to increase my chipstack as fast as possible. This may have been the incorrect way to approach this tournament.

I would like to have some opinions on how to think about these tournaments, and also if I should've played this hand any differently.

Sorry in advance if I forget anything in this hand, I normally don't post hands to be analyzed from memory too often.

I'm in mid position with :ah4: :jh4: , someone in big-blind min-raises preflop. I have a stacksize of approximately 15 big blinds.

I re-raise an extra 3 big blinds, he calls. Everyone else has folded, we are Heads Up going into the flop.

Flop: Ad :ad4: :ad4::ad4: :qs4: :8h4: , may not have been an 8 but it was definitely a heart and not a face card.

Opponent checks, I raise 3 or 4 big blinds, opponent goes all in. I call.

He shows :as4: :qd4: .

I don't hit a heart on the turn or the river. He wins the hand.

Thanks in advance!

Also, the ace of diamonds isn't showing up as an icon, is there a limit to how many of them I'm allowed to put in a post?

I mean it's a freeroll with 20k people the guy could have easily had 2-7 offsuit or 89s or just about anything and just be smashing buttons. So I think thats a pretty easy call on the flop.

Realistic hand breakdown/advice:

I would probably just shove pre, 15bb deep facing a min raise with AJs is probably just a jam.

However your hand description is also confusing you say he was the big blind and min raised but that you 3 bet him, did you limp originally or something and then he min raised?

This isn't light at all especially with your stack size. It should always go in.

It was an easy call for all-in. Because a Q showed up on the flop, it was more likely your opponent could have had AK or maybe even A10 or worse given it was a free-roll. than AQ. And of course an AK would have also check-reraised on the flop expecting that you have a lower kicker Ace.

Poker players are normally warned against "Level One" thinking, e.g. thinking that begins and ends with "I have a pretty good hand, so I'll bet". Players are warned to consider what the opponent might have, what the opponent thinks the player might have, etc.

In the early stages of freerolls that have many participants I find hand reading very difficult. Many players are putting chips in the pot with any hand or no hand. I actually think Level One thinking is correct at this stage of large freerolls. Don't bother to try to figure out what the other player has. You have a decent hand? Put your chips in.

Is there any info on the players? that's what would factor in me either shoving or folding. I don't really like your raise size with only 15 BB's. It was a shove/fold situation. without knowing anything about the villian or the players still left to act that you raised into, I guess I'd probably limp. AJs is one of those hands that just too often is dominated but its a great hand to get in cheap. In certain circumstances, I'd even flat call this and fold to a re-raise if that person wasn't a complete maniac. Hope this helps.
If you run a hud, maybe go back and look at the hands the got you into the 15bb situation in the first place. To be fair, I'm not sure what stage of the tournament it was..
Happy grinding

Well in this kind of tournaments people go crazy with some trash hands like J4o so basically the proper strategy is play tight and wait for a good hand and value bet them.

I would play the same like you, I wouldn't fold top pair in freeroll ever, you could also go all-in preflop with 15 bbs it's not bad I guess.
