Unless your planning on turning your hand into a bluff, I'd elect to check it down here.

However, an argument could be made for C-betting the flop if you think Villain is limp-calling all sorts of trash. I mean it really depends on what kind of read you had on him in the first place. In freerolls on wpn people limp-call with such garbage that the more I think about it a c-bet on the flop makes a lot of sense even if it's one and done. As far as betting for value though (OTR) I think that would be cutting it a bit close.

I debated a c-bet on the flop just to see where he was but with my 3x open I thought a K or a T could be possible. BB will defend wide I know. I chose to minimize damage. In the end aggression I think would of won the day but I just didn't think it was the right spot. I had not been at the table long and really didn't have any info on the player.

Limp behind pre. Off 40bb we do not want to be playing big pots with low PPs. I would rather iso raise a hand like 98s here that has more potential and better runouts to barrel on than 44.

Checking down.

I can see your point in not raising to start. I guess I tend more to opening in that situation and not letting the blinds have a free look. Letting more in the pot and flopping a set would probably win more money in the end.

Exactly, a small pocket pair is a hand we want to go multiway with and have as little invested as possible before the flop as we only flop a set 12% of the time. When deep stacked our ISO-raising and 3betting ranges should be linear, or, compose of hands we want to play a big pot with.
