Blinds 5k/10k 17 players a lot of small stacks and 8 players till the cash
Villain- raised to 2.5 bigs with about 135000 behind him and 1 caller to me
Hero- Shove with AQ suited 16bigs ish

Villain -66 calls and runs dead for me

Like my play style is to win the whole tournament thats why i shoved and went for a 50/50 so if i win i have a massive stack yaknow?

Also i believed a small pocket pair would fold a hand like that as i have been showing plenty of high pocket pairs where i shove all in almost all the time so i had the image of a tight player.

aq vs 66

with only 8 to go until money, perhaps more caution was in order. You never said how big your stack was, unless the "16bigs ish" is your blinds. then you would be same size or thereabouts with villain. maybe a re-raise to test the waters, he four-bets then you fold. also, what was his playing style like? loose or tight?

He was probably thinking same as you, time to double up.

IMO it is a too loose call, because with 66 the maximum we can aspire vs a shove is a coin flip and with various shorts remaining is a big mistake to me on the other hand nice shove by your side.

PD: I can feel your pain :(

If you want to put yourself in a position to win the tournament, it's a standard jam with AQ here for 16 big blinds. However, with a lot of short stacks, it's probably a -$EV play to jam here, unless your stack is one of the shorter ones and you don't think you can fold your way to the money. But like you said, your goal was to win, so I feel like this is a standard play.

@froggeedogs Thanks for that however i guess it is a matter of play style as i aspire to win the whole tournament rather than cash the minimum amount guaranteed if that makes sense.

16 Bigs was my stack which was fairly above average at that point maybe the 8th stack out of the tournament.

Thank you to everyone else who replied as i was quite confused with this hand and thought a shove on my part would've gotten a small pocket pair like that to fold with his stack size not relative to a coin flip to make the cash situation.

@froggeedogs Also his image was quite loose, however he made some hero calls which worked out well for him at times so i believe he wasn't a standard rec player.

Sorry, i don't quite follow how it was a -$EV play as i was second to act and we had similar stack sizes with a 50/50 flip if he had called?

Would you mind explaining it to me.

Thanks

I would do the same thing. The villain actually made a bad call for his entire stack with small pocket pairs!!!
