Play-by-Play

Pre-Flop
3-betting here is good - I like it. The sizing is a little low for me, with 40BB, against weak players I'd probably just go for the full 3x. However, we want to make sure we have and maintain a merged 3-bet range here - so, if you raise 2.5x with everything, I am completely ok with it - if you had AA here, would it be $1,500?

Flop
Good flop, The fact that we do not block diamonds is the only negative here.

And we face the all-in donk bet.... ok, well this is going to be call pretty much always and forever. We're prob going to have to fade a diamond or possibly even 54s but we can never fold here. Another important note, villain can never have QdJd, or AdQd.

The math:
Assume a villain range of:
(JJ+,66,33,AQs,KQs,QJs,54s,AdKd,AdJd,KdJd,AdTd,KdTd,JdTd,Td9d,9d8d,Ad5d,AQo,KQo)

Giving us 48% raw equity versus that range.

Further we only need 38% equity to breakeven. a villain range we still have 38% equity against looks like this:
(QQ-JJ,66,33,AQs-ATs,KQs,54s,Ad5d,AQo,KQo)

So yeah - this is a snap call and I'm guessing we lose here or you wouldn't be posting it - so let's see what happened.

Ewww.... yeah, well, donks huh? What are you going to do?

A note on the mental aspect of the game:

I think you know for sure that you made the right call here. In these moments, you need to let the results roll off your back.

“I made the right play, and this time it didn’t go my way.” An important little mantra I use for myself after a tough beat, and then I open another game and forget about the results, feeling good about playing well.

By taking the hand here for analysis, it’s going to be harder to let those tough beats slide. Focus on posting hands that can put a magnifier to the holes in your game. And when those holes get plugged, focus on the leaks.

Pre flop the raise is a good idea and the sizing is fine to me but it is the smallest I would 3 bet to here. 3 Betting to 3x is probably better but again, no problem with the 2.5x there. The flop is one we like, it gives us top pair, top kicker and we have to assume that if we were going against AA or KK we would have heard about it pre flop. I would never be folding in this spot with the effective stack size what it is. If they have a set then so be it. Most of the time you will be going against badly played 8s or 9s, some Qx, or some random suited connectors.

Good call on the jam from the villain as they could be doing this with all sorts of bluffs and as mentioned before, they rarely haves AA or KK here. Too bad the runout was just a total cooler but you played the hand optimally and in the long run you will chip up. I think the only thing to debate about on this hand is the pre flop raising size (2.5x as mentioned is fine to me but there are better options for sizing).
