SB: 49.69 BB (VPIP: 25.00, PFR: 25.00, 3Bet Preflop: 0.00, hands: 4)
Hero (BB): 16.04 BB
UTG: 50.05 BB (VPIP: 16.07, PFR: 10.91, 3Bet Preflop: 0.00, Hands: 56)
UTG+1: 16.42 BB (VPIP: 14.02, PFR: 9.52, 3Bet Preflop: 0.00, Hands: 107)
MP: 41.33 BB (VPIP: 0.00, PFR: 0.00, 3Bet Preflop: 0.00, Hands: 4)
CO: 21.72 BB (VPIP: 0.00, PFR: 0.00, 3Bet Preflop: 0.00, Hands: 4)
BTN: 86.3 BB (VPIP: 75.00, PFR: 0.00, 3Bet Preflop: 0.00, Hands: 4)

7 players post ante of 0.13 BB, SB posts SB 0.5 BB, Hero posts BB 1 BB

Pre Flop: (pot: 2.37 BB) Hero has J 9

fold, fold, fold, fold, fold, SB raises to 3 BB, Hero calls 2 BB

Flop: (6.87 BB, 2 players) 2 7 K
SB bets 3 BB, Hero raises to 12.92 BB and is all-in.

I'm not sure if I would normally make this move, but I was card dead. This was probably one of 3 hands I played in the previous 20 minutes.

Since you were shortstacked, I think this is an all in or fold preflop decision.

You are at the point you should be shoving/folding preflop.

I think J9 is a fold here. Flatting is the worst decision to make here. Your decisions rank as follows:
1. Fold
2. Shove
3. Call

As for the flop when you flat you hit nothing so just fold now.

If we had substantially more information on this opponent I could get behind maybe jamming this in pre, but with only 4 hands I don't think this can really be correct.

I don't think calling is right either though. We're too short to be calling a 3bb open with such a weak hand even IP at these stakes imo. It might technically be "correct" to defend a mega wide range here, but I don't think against typical $1 MTT opponents we need to be or that it makes sense since they probably aren't opening wide enough in this situation.

I would normally say based on the fact you have been so card dead that this may not be a bad move but not here today. You were card dead but the small blind had only 4 hands at your table. That tells me he did not know you had been so tight. I think this would make it harder to make this bluff go through. We also don't know what type of a player he is and he maybe a calling station and considering the odds he is getting he may call you very lightly as well. I think you had a great idea but just pick the wrong time to try it.

interesting definition of carddead: 3 hands in 20 minutes
in my experience this is marginally below average
I consider card dead when no playable hand in 1 hour @ VPIP of 20

Calling is not that bad, but if you check-shoving the flop you need to have at least 2nd pair or some draw or equity. In this spot you have nothing but J high, so it's a bad move,

Fold pre.

Wait for K9s or better for a desperation JAM. You have time with 17 BB. As played it seems like some form of suicide on your part. I sometimes do it when I got to leave anyways.

I think it’s a preflop fold, keep it tight with that stack

Well, it's interesting hand, I mean preflop obviously. My first instinct was to call, but then I saw that Scourrge said we should fold. As he is pretty much the only cc member whose hand analysis I would take seriously, I decided to think it over one more time with Equilab.

So basic math says we need 2/(2+4.37)=31%. I gave SB top 40%, which is I think is accurate for random player at these cheap tournaments, and our J9o has 40,05% against villains range. This is significantly over 31% that we need to break even, and we probably would realize 100% of our equity without problem, because we are in position and we are short stack. Obviously, the shorter we get, more important is the raw equity of our hand. So, imo, we can't fold J9o preflop here.

Postflop is just fold. Anything else is out of question.

Call/shove.. That's so 2010.

You can flat bVb, but you shouldn't stack off with j9o on that board. You need somewhat more decent equity. Something like K10X at least.

Being card dead is not an.excuse to punt tournaments.

Regards
