So, there I was relatively cruising along in an MTT when I got dealt JT suited (Diamonds) in the cut off.

(Sorry I don't have the hand replay here, but have included as much detail as possible and used the CardsChat odds Calculator to review my play). Unknown to me at the time, the player in P1 had A7 spades.

The Blinds were 200/100 with no antes.

P1 had 5500 chips and I had 4350 from a 3000 starting stack. The blinds were 6 minutes.

Pre Flop

So..... P1 limped with 200.

Everyone else folded to me. I raised to 400. BB SB and BB folded and P1 insta called.

The pot is now 1100.

The Flop comes.

FLOP

P1 delays about 20 seconds, and bets 550. The pot is now 1650.

I consider my options and having position, and the fact that P1 has been inconsistent with his play so far, a clear read is tricky, but I have him on Ax or a low pair (2 to 6).

I call his bet with me holding two pair. The pot is now 2200.

The Turn arrives.

TURN

I now have top two pair and P1 is All In. The pot is 6650.

I'm getting 2-1 odds pretty much so i call.

I thought I was doing pretty well, and the flop arrived as T clubs.

I won the hand with a Full House (beating his weaker full house!).

When I looked at the odds calculator, I realised how potentially lucky I had been given his trips from the flop and flush draw (and poss better full house than me had an A (or indeed a 7) come out)) on the river.

Any observations about this hand that could have gone so badly wrong for me would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

If you think the limper has a weak hand and knows how to fold, then you need to go bigger than a min-raise.

If you think JTs is a powerful hand, so you want to build a big pot, you are mistaken. A fold, a call, or a bigger raise all would be reasonable here, depending on your reads of the limper and the remaining players. If all players were unknown, I would fold.

As played:

On the flop, why do you have him on Ax or 22-66? A donk bet at this buy-in, except from a player who usually bets the flop, mostly represents a made hand. I'd be thinking 22-99 (assuming higher pairs would have raised pre-flop), A7, K7, 76s, AT, KT, QT, JT, T9s.
If he was in position there would be a lot more bluffs in his range.

You have about 50% equity against this range. Still, you should fold here, mostly because of the stack size and the threat of action on future streets.
Villain has shown aggression, so he is somewhat likely to bet again, and you are likely to be asked to put your tournament life on the line. Your hand is not especially likely to improve, and there is a good chance that future streets will bring an A, K, or Q, making it even harder to know where you stand.

As played, the turn is one of the best cards you could have hoped for. 3400 in your stack and 3400 / (2200+3400+3400) = you need to win 38% of the time to make the call profitable.
But what is our villain betting with here? All of those hands with tens and lower pairs should be scared off by the J, except for JT, and you have blockers for JT. It looks a lot like he has a 7 here, or maybe he was being sneaky with QQ-AA pre-flop. You are being asked to put your tournament life on the line. If you fold now you still have 17BB. It's a tough decision, but I'd fold.

Thank you, this sounds like very wise words and something that I have given consideration too, especially given the odds in play and the way the bets went. I do appreciate that I got very lucky in this hand and could quite easily have lost my tournament life with pretty much any other river card.

Thank you

My ideas are not always right, but I enjoy the exchange of thoughtful opinions. I hope you will post more hands.
